Hi all.

I am a very green brewer. Before I did my first brew i wanted to buy as much equipment as possible. I trawled ebay and gumtree and found some quite good (in my newbie opinion) bargains. From one guy i managed to grab 5 5l glass demijohns with bungs and airlocks for £15. From another fella I got a 25l youngs FV, hydrometer, decent bottle capper and 20+ caps, syphon with clip, some steriliser and 48 swing top bottles all for £25.

Got me thinking, whats everyones biggest bargain?

Sorry if this is already a thread

A friend gave me an old tea urn that's made a perfect mash tun.

Food grade buckets to use as fermentation buckets or for storage- the ones fat balls for birds come in are 10L, catering size ones for various foodstuffs come in at 10- 20L and are often free for the asking at your local takeaway.

An aquarium heater and bucket or basin to make a water bath for temperature control (I brew with kveik yeast, typically at 30 degrees C plus).

I went all grain with a £20 boiler, chiller and grain bag combo, with a bottle crate, 20 bottles and a 25kg bag of (2 year old) lager malt thrown in. Circumstances weren’t wonderful as it was from the wife of a brewer that had died, but she wanted the gear to go to someone who would get use out of it.

The boiler blew up on my 3rd brew.
