Hi All

My old man wants me to brew him a porter. But ideally we don't want 40 pints of the stuff. As this is something he will crack open as and when. Which may mean 1 porter a week get's drunk

Are there any kits that do half of this amount? Whats the shortest kit I can get?

You could make an extract brew. You'd need some DME, a couple of grains and some hops. It would be much better than a kit and you could make as much as you like. And use any spare grains and hops in another brew, they can be added to a kit. 5 litres of a simple porter could contain...

500g Light DME
60g Crystal malt
40g Chocolate malt

10g Challenger or other English hop. Goldings, Fuggles, Progress, Admiral, Northdown etc.

OG 1040ish, ABV 4% ish, IBUs 30 ish.

Add some sugar - white, brown, dark brown etc if you want more alcohol. 100g sugar would lift it to 5%. Chuck in near the end of the boil.

About 30g of black malt added to the steep would give the beer a darker, more bitter roast flavour if that's what you want.

Steep grains in 2 litres water for 30 mins, remove grains using sieve or muslin, add about 3.5 litres boiling water and bring to the boil, add the hops, boil for 30 mins, switch off, cool in sink, pour (via a sanitised sieve) into a small FV if you have one, any food grade bucket or a demijohn, pitch yeast at 20*C.

You could double the ingredients for 10 litres.

This sounds perfect! Always wanted to try my hand at boiling grains etc. Nothing better than making something for my old man from it!

Now to see what large pots I have 😏

Don't boil the grains! Steep them, remove them, boil the liquid. :thumb:
