Hi

I'm at the beginning of my all grain brewing journey and as such want to experiment with different ingredients, before i get stuck in my ways!!!!

I have brought a few 2 gallon pressure barrels. At £22 each their not that cheap, but cheaper than the 2 gal cornies, or should that cornii? I brewed up a 2 gal batch of hefewiser, a nervous time using my immersion chiller, have i double checked the seals? will the hose hold? anyhow all went well, although heating a gert big 4 gallon pot on the stove took ages!!! need a quality burner for outside me thinks.

My question is about trub. I collected 13 litres of wort for boiling and 10 liters for fermentation but there seamed to be a fair amount of trub and i'm not sure how much will settle and how much beer i will get to bottle? Is there a general rule of thumb for the amount of trub produced. The loss in a 60l brew or even a 5gal % wise is far less. but a 2 gal batch it seems to be far more, if i have to take into account a high percentage loss of maybe 20 or 30% it doesnt seem viable to brew 15 lt of beer for 10l?

help, graciously accepted

Did you use a hop strainer? :?: if not the hops being strained will act as a filter for the trub though there are other methods :thumb: . Just as a comparison I have just brewed a Stout the target brew length was 25 lts, I collected 29 ltrs of wart & OG 1043 (though now I think i could have squeezed a litre or two more :wha: ) evaporation during the boil was about 11% per hour about 4 ltrs, losses in boiler(plastic) dead space (currently working out how to improve this any ideas appreciated) & absorbsion by hops not to mention shrinkage during cooling about 4%, about 2 ltrs, so in the FV 23 lts @ OG 1054, I anticipate losing a further litre when transfering to secondary + whatever will not fill the last bottle @ bottling. All in all about 7lts. hope this is of help
