I think I understand... But maybe not? I'm using the Brewfather app for the first time. Even set my city's water profile in... don't know if that will make a difference to the recipe. Anyway.

I have set my batch size to 20L. (I know 23 seems to be the norm but it's easier to divide and scale with 20 - and I can adjust to 23 if need be - but from 23 is a bit more difficult... but I digress.)

It has given me water quantities of ~16L mash water and ~11L sparge water, resulting in "27.21L total water" but at the top of the recipe it says "pre-boil volume: 24.88L". So where have those 2.12L gone? What does "total" and "pre-boil" refer to if not the same thing?

I use a different system to you, the Brewmonk.
However I have a spreadsheet that lets you calulate your strike/sparge water.
If you send me your email by private correspondence, I'll forward it to you.

It made my life easier

Thank you, will do.

Yes thats correct loss to Mash loss to Evaporation in the boil and loss to Trub at the end when transferring. I think you Brewfather will have average settings built in but you need to put your own losses in for the calculator to be more accurate to your system and your style of brewing
