Anyone tried this barleywine from brew dog? Sounds interesting but at £10 for a 375ml bottle isn't the cheapest brew.

Bloody hell that's a lot. I paid roughly the same for a Westvleteren 12 - with its reputation I had to try it at least once - but don't think I'd go there for a Brewdog.

Sorry to go a bit off topic, i thought the Brewdog homebrew comp was a new thing but in Waitrose tonight saw this, the beer on the right, maybe a lot of you know about this already?

£10 doesn't sound *too* crazy, given it comes in at about 14%, so ca$h per unit booze isn't too distant from standard craft booze cost.
That said, there's plenty of other stuff I'd buy ahead of this though...

This has been running for a couple of years at least. Last year was a rhubarb saison which was not very good and the year before a Vienna IPA which was lovely.

Yes AB:20 was very nice, I've still got a couple waiting for a special occasion, one of which will probably be drunk on Christmas Day.

It's one of their limited edition brews available through their Abstrakt Addicts subscription, and the remainder goes in the online shop.
They're usually something special and barrel aged or whatever, hence the price.

AB:21 was liquorice and blackcurrant which I wasn't as keen on, but then I don't like liquorice so probably not surprising.

You can see the previous brews here:

Westvleteren 12 is very nice, but the price and "world's best beer" reputation seems to be mainly due to hype and limited supply.

Have you tried a St Bernardus Abt 12? Same recipe (literally, it was actually brewed by them for a long while) for a fraction of the price.

I quite agree, it was delicious but I didn't see what the gigantic fuss was about. Glad I've tried it though, if only so I can say I have.

Haven't had the St Bernardus 12, though I've had the 8 and 6 and they were both lovely. I read "Brew Like A Monk" recently and it mentioned the similarity between St Bernardus and Westvleteren so I'll investigate next time I see it.

They probably were the same 25 years ago but they aren't now. I did a side by side with them and they were quite different. Don't get me wrong though, the St Bernardus is still a fantastic beer. Personally I prefer Rochefort over either of them.
Sorry for going OT.

Thanks for the discussion, where do folks get these more unusual beers like the Belgians? Brewdog's easy for me as I live on the other side of the town they are based in. 😊

Very tempted to go and get an AB:20 to try over Christmas.

Mind you Steve, either of those bottles would taste different with ageing so you'd need to compare a 1 yr old westy12 with a 1 year old abt12 to be absolutely sure. I'd hazard a guess there's more variation in the westy than the abt12 judging from the brewing setup they have.

I've have four different phases from the 2 year old abbey beer I brewed (not a fan of the licorice phase, yuk!

Yeah they don't taste exactly the same, but it's an interesting comparison.

What's the chances? Got an AB:20 in my BrewDog advent calendar today!

I get most of my beer from BrewDog online shop these days, they usually have a good guest selection as well as their own.

You're right of course. Though even if they use the same recipe, which they don't anymore, there are so many other factors at play that it's unlikely they would be identical.

And next you'll be showing us a bottle of whiskers on kittens, or even cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels.

Dann, wouldn't pay that for the best of the craft beers beers, never mind a multi national company.
