Hi folks,

So I was starting my first partial BIAB today and I went to fire up my boiler (only used once before for a one hour boil) and it tripped the house. I have replaced the fuses in the power lead and it keeps tripping. I'm guessing this is a problem with the element. Needless to say I'm gutted and annoyed.

I have two 8litre stove pots however I would not know how to convert my recipe or if it is even possible to do a mini mash of sorts.

This was my first day off from work in a long while and I was all set to brew!!

Any advice? Is it possible to do a mini mash with two 8 ltr pots? If so can someone help with the water volumes and calcs?

My recipe is an american wheat, along the lines of blue moon.

Maris Otter
Flaked Wheat
Flaked Oats
Dry Malt extra light
Dry Malt Wheat

Coriander
Orange Peel
EK Goldings

Safale US-05 (want to keep it neutral)

Welcome to the forum :drink:

you must have a short in your element unfortunately..

There's a batch sparge calculator here that may help you with your brew?

Best of luck, and let us know how you get on :thumb:

Thanks bigyin. I've been a long time lurker but first time poster.

Batch calculator looks useful. Unfortunately I'm a bit lost. To date I have only done extract brews with my boiler. Brew in a bag was my first venture into mashing,

Is it to possible to do a mash with two 8ltr stockpots? Most guides call for a minimum of 12ltr?

I would also have to boil using these stockpots.

I'm afraid I've never done BIAB or batch sparging, so I'm very reluctant to try and offer further advice

The Chat room is open at the weekends - see if there's anyone around there who could advise?? (and if that link doesn't work, use the red 'click here to chat..' link up above)

Best of luck :thumb:

Gave this brew a go using a couple of stockpots.

It's an American Wheat/ Blue Moon clone of sorts.

Mashed 2.4kg of grain and split the boil. Ended up with about 7 litres of wort, topped up in the FV to 21.

Got an OG of 1.040, with temperature correction this came to 1.043. My recipe aimed for 1.046 so I'm pretty happy considering the crisis!

My problem now is keeping the temperature down. Nowhere in the house is less than 23degrees :( Pitched last night with US-05 (keeping it neutral) so ill let it do it's thing.

The fresh coriander smelt incredible! I'll definitely be using it in future brews.

I bought a secondhand boiler and the same thing happened to me whilst I was trying to descale it ,but after a thorough descaling it's working ok now.

I figured the boiler was tripping because of an electrical fault with the element. Surely descaling wouldn't help? Though I'm willing to try anything!

Someone advised me on here that the limescale build up was causing the element to overheat and trip the mains ,which seems to have been the problem as it was very heavily scaled.

Yes, it is a good heat insulator so the element gets too hot and can trip - hope you have removed the scale ok, there are descaling chemicals in your local supermarket :thumb:
