Just started fermenting some Elderberry Wine....

I know of people that use used screw tap bottles when bottling. Is this a good idea ? I mean would a used scew cap bottle give an adequate seal ?

If not is there an inexpensive way of sealing it ? I know with corks you can wax seal the neck of the bottle. Would this work with scew tops ?

You'll be fine with screw tops - disinfect the used tops with boiling water; I only used a screw top once again before discarding but I've not had any issues yet. If you use them while they're still hot they'll shrink a little while cooling and make a pretty good seal assuming you screw them on pretty tight.

I use them all the time. I tend to use them about 3 or 4 times then swap them over. Quick to use and easy to get, oh and they are free. Can't understand why people use corks.

I also use a lot of screw tops as over here the 1 ltr bottles are screw tops and the 750 ml are all corkers. I too soak first in a chlorine hot solution then rinse in cold water then when bottling i leave them in a tub with videne until needed. Never had a problem, and they hold carbonation well too. :thumb:

I use them for my wines aswell, I get a steady supply off family and of course a few bottles flow back their way. That said I've only used them a few times each, when I think the seal is a bit dodgy I'l buy a pack of corks with the plastic on. (cant waste bottles now can we :D )

I've not tried these as yet. Do these really give a good seal, i.e. can you lay the bottle down with no leakage?

Jazz, I use waxed corks and still finish with the screw cap. I cork just to be absolutely sure, but like the look of my finished bottles with matching screw cap ;)

See my world famous 'Show us your stash' thread for updated pics :thumb:

I'm puzzled why noone markets a circular plastic seal that could be dropped into a screwcap top to renew the seal after the original has been compressed by the first use.
