I spotted in Asda yesterday they had Highland Spring sparkling water on offer at £2 for 12 x 500ml plastic bottles.

Would these be suitable to put some brew in as I am seriously running short of bottles and they are a bargain at them prices.

My plants have already had a few litres of sparkling water feeding them

They should be, but not for any major length of time i.e. drink them first then move onto the glass bottles!

I've found that up to 3 months is ok, after that the beer starts to go flat as the PET can leak air (and therefore CO2), and can have a bit of a twang to the taste.

Thanks for the reply and exactly what I was hoping for

This stuff is for drinking through the summer so if the UK is as normal it will be all over in a blink of an eye

Make sure you keep the filled bottles out of the light so that the beer doesn't skunk - that's why you should use brown bottles if possible.

For free Bottles Squire, place a box next to your local bottle bank with a note saying the type of bottles you need, leave it a couple of days and let the Great British public do their magic and Hey presto you will have loads!

There are so many ways to get free bottles. The bottle bank idea is a great one. I just walk over to the bar, which is about 20 metres away. Not everyone can do that. But you can also buy them in supermarkets, they contain free beer, or simply ask friends, pubs etc for them.

Yup, I get most of mine from friends / family.

I run an evaluation scheme for them to participate in - if they bring me a dozen bottles, they qualify as a tester for the latest brew and get a 500ml sample to report back on... :thumb:

Used the highland spring (green?) bottles to bottle 2011 vintage cider in. The last bottle was drunk around August 2012 and the bottle was rock hard and the cider very dry and fizzy. It's also the bottles I use for my "carbonation checker" (the last bottle of beer goes in there from the bottling bucket so I can feel how the carbonation is coming along). Good quality bottles but not as good as brown glass (for beer).

I did this and went back 3 days later to find an empty box and a sign saying "buy your own f***ing bottles" not all towns are that friendly it would seem.

That's not very sporting, after all you are sparing them the effort of depositing one by one. Maybe you should try a different one, mine was buried in bottles thought the box had been pilfered.
