is there a bottle use limit. ever times i use a set of bottle i put a mark on the bottom with a sharpie i have just seen my Grolsch(swing top) have 6 marks on them.

It depends wildly on bottle type, the latest Grolsch 450ml swing tops are particularly thin and lightweight as many big brewers are going down the use lighter bottles with less glass for reducing there C02 footprint,.... I had a few breakages with the aforementioned and that was with the minimal pressures of a force carb beer!

As for some of the older/bigger swing tops they would last a lifetime for me as they are built like the proverbial brick-sh$t-house

I think you just need to judge for yourself depending on how sturdy the bottle is and also whether you are bottle pre-carb beer or doing bottle conditioning.

I acquired my Grolsch bottles back when `Yuppies' were the latest Thatcherite fad. Been using them ever since but a couple of years ago had to invest in new rubber washers as the old ones had perished beyond use. I do mean `invest' as well as they cost a ridiculous amount from my local home brew shop. Ah well - here's to another 30 years or so...

If they have defects, they break.

If they don't, they tend to last quite a long time!

My carbon footprint is very low - I have the same bottles going round bar the ones I give away or get from the rugby club!

Well, yes and no. If everyone buys everything off the internet then how are small local shops going to keep going? There's little enough point in going in to town as it is, I wouldn't like to see my LHBS closing down. And although I could buy all my homebrew kits off the internet, because they're heavy the savings are pretty small after you've paid postage. Don't get much of a chat off them either.

We as a ppl need to support shops more and bugger the internet off,

Local shop LME = £11 (coopers)
internet LME = £6 + £6.50 p&p (white lable stuff)

Horses for courses.

I use my local equivalent of Wilkos (Boyes) in Ilkley for basic gear and common or garden kits, I use my LHBS in Shipley (20 minutes drive) for more specialist stuff/premium kits and I bulk buy stuff when I need to with free P&P for amounts over £60 from the excellent Homebrew Online. I've got the odd bit of stuff from other online shops where necessary (mini keg starter kit etc.).

Bet our new member from Thurso doesn't have access to a LHBS? If the nearest one is in Aberdeen, it's three hours away!!! His ONLY real option is the internet!
