I have a 40 litre Buffalo boiler and when I boil 30 litres of wort, the boil is a little too vigorous. Much more than a rolling boil, more of a boiling wort splashing out of the boiler kind of boil. If I turn the thermostat down, the element switches off and I have no boil at all. Is there any way to turn the heat down a little? Some sort of variable resistor on the element or something?

this has appeared in another discussion, i dunno if its been used by any brewers yet but looks like an ideal candidate for the job, the transistor based jobs linked to above need a bit more heatsink than supplied and may be very noisy disrupting radio/wifi/telly...

afaik its used by distillers to control electric elements heating their boil pots.

edit*** if u do give it a punt dont forget a heatsink

They both look good, thanks guys. I think I'll give this one a go first as it's the cheapest option. Just hope I don't blow myself up :electric:

I've never had any problems with boiling 30L in my Buffalo. It rolls nicely and doesn't splash out. I wonder what the difference is. :hmm:

I have this boiler... I find some wort can be more active than others (no idea why)... Not jumping out at 30 though.... Sometimes when im at max...
