A body found on a street in Wigan could be covered in potentially hazardous substances, police say.

Greater Manchester Police is urging anyone who has had direct contact to immediately seek medical advice.

Emergency services were called to Kilburn Drive in Shevington at around 7pm on Thursday 24 November 2022 after the body was discovered in the road.

Police say it is still too early to confirm if it is a man or a woman.

A scene is currently in place at the location and contained on Kilburn Drive with no disruption to the wider area.

Police are working to identify the body and enquiries are ongoing.

GMP says: "Police believe there are potentially hazardous substances on the body and anyone who has had direct contact with the body should speak to officers or seek medical advice immediately.

"Officers are out speaking to residents and are highly visible in the area.

"The scene is contained, and it is believed there is no wider risk to the surrounding area.

"We will keep the public updated when we have more information".

Potentially hazardous? Somethings either hazardous or it's not. Unless he was carrying a couple of bottles of homebrew to share with a mate. That's potentially hazardous!

Me with scrapers, drills and screwdrivers...now that IS hazardous!
My hands are like chickens feet after today's palaver..

A potentially hazardous substance found on a body discovered in a Greater Manchester street is being examined by the murder investigation team.
The body was found on Kilburn Drive in the Shevington area, near Wigan, at about 19:00 BST on Thursday.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said they were working to identify the body, which remained at the scene.
The unidentified substance was "low risk" and of "no wider risk" to the community, the force said.
The identity of the dead person and how long the body had been on the rough ground between two houses could not be confirmed by the force.

Speaking from the scene, Det Supt Alan Clitherow said a post-mortem examination would take place in "due course" once the body had been removed from the scene.
He said it was a "challenging set of circumstances" and officers were "unpicking exactly what had gone on".
"We don't know what the substance is, we have done some initial inquiries, we know it's low risk... anyone directly in contact with the body should seek medical advice if they feel unwell, but there's no wider risk to anyone else," he said.

Mr Clitherow said members of the public should not be alarmed if they saw officers wearing protective clothing to remove the body, saying it was "purely precautionary" and standard procedure.
He added the cordon which remained in place was contained to Kilburn Drive and there was no disruption to the wider area.

Many years ago a chap in work got splashed with methylene chloride which is quite an aggressive and unpleasant solvent.
It evaporated immediately from his clothes and he suffered no ill effects but insisted on a trip to A and E...
While there I booked him in and described the nature of his reason for being there which fell under "chemical spill".
Well....there was mild panic, talk of phoning the fire brigade out putting up a wash tent but they eventually settled for locking him the broom cupboard until they investigated the chemical in question. This took about half hour of calling whoever and then they let him out and sent us away.

A man whose body was found dumped on a street covered in "potentially hazardous" substances had been shot and attacked with acid, police said.
Liam Smith's body was discovered on Kilburn Drive in Shevington, Wigan, at about 19:00 BST on Thursday.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has launched a murder inquiry into the "unique and shocking circumstances".
Following Mr Smith's death, his family paid tribute to the 38-year-old as "the life and soul of the party".
His body was found on a patch of rough ground between houses which leads to a dirt track and open fields.
GMP said: "Detectives are working tirelessly to establish the exact details of this murder, which took place in unique and shocking circumstances on a quiet residential street."
The hazardous substances were not believed to pose any further harm or risk to the public and have been contained, it added.
Det Ch Insp Gina Brennand said the "shocking murder of a much-loved family man" was the first fatal shooting in the area for more than two years.
She urged anyone who had seen "anything unusual or out of the ordinary near to the victim's home" on Thursday to contact the police.
"We are determined to recover the weapon and find Liam's killer," she said.

A police cordon remains in place at the scene while investigations continue.
"Specialist officers are taking precautions surrounding this incident so please do not be alarmed when they are seen in the area wearing protective clothing," a force spokesman said.
"This is purely precautionary as per the standard procedure at the scene."
The public has also been warned not to approach or contact anyone they suspect of being involved in the killing.
In a brief statement, Mr Smith's family said he was "kind-hearted, funny, the life and soul of the party".
"He was the most devoted dad, much-loved son, brother, grandson and uncle.
"He will sorely be missed by all who knew and loved him."
