Want to have a go at making this. I do have one concern, though... The recipe includes some wheat malt. I used 3% of that in an ipa (for head retention) which has been bottled for 3 months now and it still hasn't dropped clear. Not as cloudy as it used to be but a bit muddy indeed. I didn't use Protafloc or any other finings when I brewed it but I didn't use them for my bitter either and it cleared considerably faster. If you have brewed Kenny, did it drop clear without finings in a reasonable amount of time? I know the cloudiness doesn't affect the taste but it would be nice if the drink also looked nice, dammit.

I have done Kenny a few times, i always use kettle finnings (protofloc) but never any other finnings and it's always dropped clear in normal time.

Same here, I always use kettle finings and never had a problem getting Big Kenny to clear.
It's a cracking pint too :thumb:

Yep, me three :thumb: A great pint, I have made it 3 or 4 times and never had problems clearing it.

i've made Big Kenny about 5 times now and its always clear as a bell after fermentation, and normally good to start tasting after only a week!!! Unless i'm just impatient!!
Best brew i've done and i always try and have some in stock (doing another 10 gallons on monday!!)

same here......prot in the boil and cleared nicely, what yeast did you use in your IPA? I use wheat malt quite a lot with both pale brews and bitters and haven`t had any probs with clearing. Saying that I don`t expect my hefeweissien to be very clear

I'm thinking of doing my first Big Kenny with all WGV hops - bittering and aroma - any reason why this wouldn't be a sound idea? I see in Graham Wheeler that there's a Scottish ale, Belhaven I think, that does this.

I think the grain bill for the big kenny is spot on - hops are a more personal choice and anything is worth a go :thumb:

I used S-04 for the first time. Seems like it has a reputation of clearing really well so that's why I was a bit baffled by the less-than-appetizing look of my beer. The malt bill was pale ale, munich, crystal and wheat. So it is still a mystery to me why it was so cloudy compared to my bitter which cleared decently...

I'll surely be doing an IPA again but probably with a different recipe, Rick. I actually have a bag of US-05 sitting in the fridge and after I've sorted out the obligatory + ever-so-popular oatmeal stout and a bitter, then it might be time for a more yank style pale ale. SNPA maybe?

SNPA :D superb beer - i`ve done a clone and there are a few recipes on the forum, lots of cascade and then a bit more ;)
