I was joined by muddydisco (& smod popped in for a bit too) a brewday today :thumb:

We had a good brewday despite me being a bit disorganised & cluttered in the garage, it was good to chat and come up with a few ideas, I think smod & muddy' will have a fully automated push button brewery by the end of the month ;) :D

Anyway this is what we brewed:

BIG KENNY

Targets & Stuff

Volume 60L
OG 1.050
IBU 40
Mash 90 min 67c
Boil 90 min
Brewhouse Efficiency 70% *deliberately lowered to 70%

Grain
12.5kg Pale Malt, Maris Otter (Grain 91.5%)
680gm Torrified Wheat (Grain 5.0%)
200gm Crystal Malt (Grain 1.5%)
140gm Chocolate Malt (Grain 1.0%)
140gm Roasted Barley (Grain 1.0% )

Hops
130gm Challenger [5.80 %] (90 min) 30.0 IBU
----
70gm Goldings, East Kent [4.10 %] (15 min) 5 IBU
80gm Fuggles [3.20 %] (15 min) 5 IBU
----
30gm Fuggles [3.20 %] (0 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops - 15mins at 80c
30gm Goldings, East Kent [4.10 %] (0 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops - 15mins at 80c

I used Phils sugar points system again the runnings were at 1.020 when we had collected all of the points we needed, the boiler was then topped up to an 85L preboil volume.

IC added at 20 mins, late hops at 15 mins and rehydrated protofloc granuals added at 10 mins.

Aroma hops added when the wort was at 80c and steeped for 15 mins, we stirred the wort for the duration of chilling which took 20 mins to get from 80c to 25c

We collected 62L at 1.050 so i'm happy with that - pretty much bang on target.

There was LOADS of trub left in the bottom of the boiler (I'll add a picture later on)

The brew was split between 3 FV's I'm fermenting one with S04 and one with Nottingham I think MD is going to use S04 in his too. I'm lookimg forward to hearing what he thinks of it :thumb:

Had a great day, bacon sandwiches this morning done on the BBQ, then a BBQ for lunch (cheers for the grub MD :thumb: ) great company, a good chat and some intersting idea's coming up.

Time for a beer I think

yeah 340g in total

Aimed at getting 75% of the IBU's from the 90 min hops and 25% of the IBU's from the 15 min addition and I decided to use 1g per L for aroma hops. :thumb:

Yes I've gone S-04 too, It's all tucked up in the cupboard awaiting first signs of life. I didn't spill a drop either on the way home!!!!
I'm ordering Placcy fv bins this week and get kettle elements soon after I'm itching now to do an AG brew NOW!!!! B*£$&*d!

Trub...

By the way what was the reduced efficiency all about?

I can hit 84-85% efficiency consistently but that means sparging right down to the bone, by reducing my efficiency to 70% I can get the sugar points I need and stop sparging at 1.020 - the beer seems to have an improved fuller mouthfeel as a result.....still experimenting though.

Aleman has done a no sparge brew which he sent me a bottle of - it was awesome :thumb:

Got yer Wez. :thumb:

That's something I will have to look into in the future :hmm:

I'm still experimenting with it - but I can say that stopping at 1.020 has made improvements (imo)

I'm also interested in AT's bittering that he did on his last brew (100% of the EBU's in the last 15 mins  )

I did a 75% 90 25% 15 today

I may try a 50%/50% and then a 25%/75%

:hmm:

Just finished weighing out my grain and hops for a brew I've got planned for tomorrow.(details tomorrow when I've got a bit more time)So I'm not going to change it now.

But I've been thinking about 25%/75% bittering for some time now and will be looking out for AT's and your progress in this method. :thumb:

Ouch - that sounds an expensive way to get IBUs
