Actually no. The inside of the metal of the pot is cooled rapidly by the energy being absorbed by the liquid.

I assumed that this would also be the case for the outside of the element but you have a far more intense, concentrated heat source. Basically, when my bag is in the pot, even when topping up the heat during the mash and for the mashout, I never get any steam bubble nuclei forming (so no "not quite boiling kettle" sound).

I can see that not being the case with elements - far far smaller surface area so dissipation is going to be less efficient so a higher element temperature required to raise the wort temperature in a timely manner.

Five brews in with a bag that fits the pot completely (rests on the bottom) and no signs whatsoever of any problems.

(Oh, and there ARE tales on this very forum of singed toggles.. :shock: )
 
My Buffalo boiler doesn't have an exposed element which is why I was thinking electric was the same as gas. Perhaps I won't have any issues then, especially as I intend preventing the bottom of the bag touching the bottom of the boiler.
 
i did place a metal colander in the bottom of my pot,
but now i know how the bag fits into the pot with the grain in it secured with the bungy ,
you can see how the bag sits in the water before you add the grain... :thumb:


i know i dont need to worry about the bag touching the base of the pot,
it makes it easy to do the mashout at the end of the mash,
if you have electric elements you could possibly lift the bag slightly above the element before applying any heat, ...

I'll definitely check your links Calumscott, that How To guide is what prompted to get off my lazy bum and source out the boiler, I shall forever be in your debt! My missus on the other hand, she might not be so effusive with praise!

Artyb, thank you for the idea of using the bag to suspend the hops which will mean I can do without a strainer for now, hadn't thought of that one :thumb:

Joey1002, sounds like a plan changing the tap in the future, I'll look out for one of them. I take it the change to a ball valve is a dead simple job, something even a numpty like me can do?

:rofl: Just be sure, if she likes a beer, to brew some that will blow her mind. If she doesn't, then get a few demis of wine on the go too or a bucket of cider! :thumb:

its all quite simple once you have done one brew.... :thumb:
you need a good list of proceedings and quantities and your away

once you smell that mash and then the boiling with hop additions you will be as hooked as we are. :tongue:
