Where is the best place for me to keep my FV if I start a brew this week? I have either a cupboard under the stairs, I can then insulate the FV with bubblewrap and blankets, Or is it best to put it in a water bath in the garage?

Any help would be greatly appreaciated

Hi!
It depends on the ambient temperature under the stairs. If it is too cool for the yeast, you will need some form of heating and, of course, some means of temperature control.
The same goes for the water bath in the garage.

I have my second brew in the FV in my kitchen, which gets quite cold without heating during the day while I'm at work. Aquarium heater in a storage box with no insulation is keeping it at a steady 20c for a cost of about £13 (£5 box from Wilkos, £8 heater from Amazon). Would recommend.

Insulation only reduces the rate of heat loss. So if there is no heat generated in the insulated item then the temperature will fall, albeit more slowly than it would have done without the insulation. Yeast will initially produce some heat in the fermentation process but this will reduce to negligible when the activity dies down, say after a 2/3 days or so. So after this initial period the temperature will fall away until it reaches the surrounding room temperature.
If you are using an ale type yeast (rather than a lager yeast) then a water bath will maintain the temperature you require in your garage, just like mine is doing at present. :thumb:
