I have a 5 gallon air-tight vessel, and a funnel. aside from that i have normal kitchen appliances and tools.
I want to brew some beer, not a over complicated recipe but still a good beer. Keep in mind this is my first attempt at brewing.

Based on my own very novice experience (my first brew is currently fermenting) I'd definitely go for a kit. It's good for getting your head round the process. Add a hydrometer and thermometer to your tool set. Also think about a vessel for your beer to go once fermented; I got a barrel as part of my kit but I've also been collecting (lots!) of 500ml brown bottles too.

Yep, definitely add a thermometer and also some sanitiser... you must ensure everything is spotless.

Go for a two can kit if you can.

Best of luck.
