Hey,

I was just playing around in Beersmith, trying too plan my next batch. What i wonder is, would a 1,7 kg Coopers kit, be the same as 1,7 LME, gravity wise? Im not thinking about boiling the kit, but trying to estimate how much LME to add, for desired ABV etc.

Cheers - Ray

well how to find out is input the water (23l) add your 1.7kg in lme then see the abv , does it match the can abv % ? if not adjust amount of lme until abv % matches

Does the ABV on a kit allow for the additional 0.2% or so from priming?

The ABV given on a kit is, of course, a guess as it is determined in reality by too many other factors. Priming sugar accounts for around 0.2% ABV so isn't really all that relevant.

The only way to know the strength of your finished beer is to take OG and FG measurements, bung it in the calculator (and even that is an approximation AND there are different methods of calculation depending on who you are!) then add 0.2 for the priming sugar if you used 5g/l (around 1/2 tsp per pint) - adjust accordingly from there. :thumb:

To get a rough estimate in beersmith and the like what I have done before is if the kit says it will produce 5% ABV with 1kg added sugar, I add 1kg of sugar and then increase the LME until I get to 5%. Not sure how accurate it is really but hey ho.
