Just trying to get my head round beersmith 2. I put in an Imperial IPA from Greg Hughes book and I get the following in brew steps

brew_zps41ff5d19.png

Do I put 39.58l in to start with like it says top left re Boil Size
If so why does it say total water needed 47.86l?
I've put in that I'm using a 70l pot via BIAB.

Just changed the mash profile to Biab, medium body and its adjusted it to

Boil Size 40.72
Water needed 45.79

Still seems alot of water for a 23l batch?

I have 11l as the first mark on the sight glass in the hlt so add this on to make reading easier.
I've tried going from an exact amount to empty but doesn't work as I underlet without a pump or huge head height.

70l pot on gas yes?

Seems too much to me.

36 or 37 litres for 23l to fermenter.

56 litres for 40l to fermenter.

You'll need to adjust your equipment profile. I copied one of the BIAB ones and did this:

Brewhouse Efficiency: 75%
Hop Utilization Factor: 100%
Mash Tun Volume: 70l
Lauter Tun Deadspace: 0l

Tick the calculate boil Vol Automatically box

Boil Time: 90 mins
Boil off: 3.5l

Tick the use boil off as hourly rate box

Cooling Shrinkage: 4%

Loss to trub and chiller: 3.82l
Top up water: 0l
Batch Volume: 23l
Fermenter Loss: 1.7l

Should get you close. Remember to pick your equipment AND pick a BIAB Mash profile for your recipe. :thumb:

Thanks Callum thats improved it greatly :thumb:

The mash profile I used was BIAB,medium body,is this the norm for ales?

I use the medium for most things unless I'm doing something that needs masses of malt. Light is just too light IMO.
