While recently voting for Hoddy's Beer World Cup, it struck me that I haven't tried a large number of the beers that you good folks chose as your absolute favourites. After some discussion over on that thread the seed for Beer of the Month was planted.

The idea of this thread is that we pick a commercial beer each month and you have a month to source it, try it and review it here. We can then compare notes and maybe even come up with some recipe ideas.

To get us started, I've picked a beer from the World Cup thread that I have never tried.

December 2018's beer of the month is.....

Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier

To get us started I've picked something from the world cup list that looks to be easily obtainable.

My brief research tells me it is brewed at the Weihenstephan Monastery Brewery, a brewery that is over 1000 years old and carries with it the distinction of being the world’s oldest existing brewery.

So that's it. If you want to play along, go find the beer in December, drink it and come back with your thoughts. Let the beer hunting begin!

Nice one, quite a few beers on the world cup list I want to try so will look out for this one. (Waitrose looks like a likely source according to Google)
Anyone knowledgeable about wheat beers? How should this best be served? Temperature? And do you deliberately want to get as much yeast in the glass as possible with this one?

This dude from Paulaner talks with some authority on the matter of pouring a weiss. It seems the yeast goes in and a big head is what you're aiming for!

From the book Beer Hunter, Whisky Chaser: New Writing on Beer and Whisky in Honour of Michael Jackson.

The Weihenstephan brewery may be the birthplace of the lager style!

Love this idea - nice one! Will definitely hunt one of these bad boys down.

Excellent. I haven't tried this one either so will keep my eyes peeled for it.

Great idea, I have made the thread a sticky so it stays at the top if like the beer competitions threads a new one can be started every month a will un-stick the original and stick the new one each month.
How is the beer of month being chosen? Are we having a rota like the competitions?

I'm all up for hearing ideas. There are 36 beers in the world cup thread, so I just chose the first one out of there. One thing I did think, was that the commercial beers could align style wise with the monthly competition?

If nobody has any strong feelings, I'll keep working through the world cup list!

I really like this idea.
I am going to pop out to night and get one of these, even if I have to drive up the road to Harrogate.

My only concern is that a month is a long time to wait for the next beer of the month.

How about beer of the week? :beer1:

Didn't have it in our local (small) Waitrose this afternoon and don't have a a Sainsbury's close by so if anyone spots it elsewhere please let us know.

I've seen this in quite a few Sainsbury's around London.

Great idea, following beer world cup works, that's us done for for a while! Monthly competitions is good as well.

We could also see if any beers are on sale at online shops like Beer Hawk, Honestbrew etc. so we can get it cheaper.

Great idea.

@braziliain - any chance of getting the beers for the next 2 or 3 months decided in advance, only it might be easier to get those bought if we don't go to good beer shops too often.

Are you going to pick a non-alcoholic beer for January? wink...

Wash your mouth out sir! :laugh8:

Yeah, we could rack up a list. I just sort of liked the idea of a monthly hunt. Give me something to do! If the preference is to have a list for each quarter, say, we could do that.
