I often nip in charity shops to see what beer glasses they have! So I have an eclectic selection from which to pick. But I could easily add a lot more!

I have about 400 to choose from....

But I tend to use a Kingfisher one or a Reading Beer festival one for home brew. Or a Newquay Steam Beer one (bit partial to Newquay Steam Beer artifacts )

For commercial beers I try to match the beer with the glass... Such as these:

I am a strong believer that beers taste better in the proper glass.

Glasses are pretty good value on eBay at the moment

My wife & daughter keep their eyes open when in charity shops (most weekends) for 'odd' looking beer glasses. Don't have many, maybe 5 or 6, but do have a few I like and dearest one was probably a quid!

I have a few affligem, leffe and maredsous chalice glasses a duval and hoegaarden grand cru tulip glasses as well as an aventinus glass. note all of these were obtained legally. :p

dying to find a Wieckse red pokal glass me and my girls agreed is was perfect for fruity beers.

I have to say, for a bitter, you CANNOT beat a tulip glass. No idea why but a tulip glass filled with ale and a lovely creamy white head is a fine thing to behold, and makes the beer taste divine.

Wheat beer has to be drunk from a classic thin at the bottom, widening then narrowing again at the top style glass. No idea why, but it does.

Everything else I drink from a tall, narrow, straight sided pint glass made with thick glass.

Who'd have thought this would be such an interesting thread?

EDIT: Having given this two seconds more thought, I sense a new obsession coming on...

I used to complain when my wife wanted a look in charity shops wherever we went, that was a long time ago now though.......

If you're drinking bottled conditioned home brew, it's best to consider a glass that you can pour all of your beer into in one pour. I quickly found out that if you use something too small, the second pour is yeasty!

This is my only consideration on how the glass affects the taste. Rest is what you like the look and feel of.

Right now I am using a chalice style glass which I really like. Present from swmbo which was a welcome surprise.

I've got this bad boy, it's only big enough for a little 'Old Tom' session though.

Seriously, I bought a set of 4 beer glasses from TK Maxx earlier in the year, I can't find them now though. I'm not sure the quality of the glass is all that good, they make my homebrew taste mediocre. All glasses seem to do the same thing...

My favourite is my Orval Chalice which I got from a bar I used to frequent when it was closing down. Asked the landlord on that occasion.

I have several others I have either bought from the breweries or ahem acquired. My GF bought me the Dartington set you mentioned, 3 decent quality glasses which suit a range of styles.

I like the look of those tulip glasses but for me they never look like they could hold 500ml plus a head, which when pouring from a bottle is a bit of a problem (unless you pour hold take a swig then top up)

whatever shape a pint pot is it holds a pint!

a tulip glass amplifies the head. a tall weissbier glass is neutral, a standard tapered glass reduces it. So pouring a weissbier into a tulip glass is great if you want to drink foam. Not sure what a chalice does!

The glass does make a difference. it all depends on what your preference is.

so for duval even though I have the proper duval tulip glass, I prefer to drink it from my affligem chalice :-)

That's interesting D_o_J. I didnt' know that, no wonder my beers don't usually have much head as I mostly use a tapered glass because I like the shape. When you say tulip glass do you mean a tulip pint glass or one of those with a 'stand' like the duval type or doesn't it matter?

That shut me up, eh?

It's weird I know the rationale behind the glasses used for most types of alcoholic drinks yet never really thought about it for beer glasses despite it being my tipple of choice.

A handle or stem is usually there to preserve serving temperature but beyond that I'm clueless. Quite interesting when you get into it really. More knowledge to acquire on the path to beer nerd nirvana.
