Hi all

newby here well i did some homebrew 20 years ago....but just getting started again..

i have the wherry kit.......all going ok so far i think except the stuck at 1020 usual thing after 6 days as ive seen on here, so gave it a v gentle stir and replaced lid etc, hopefully will help etc ...(any advise accepted )

My issue is if i buy a bottle topper kit will the lids etc fit old cleaned comercial bottles as in Newcastle brown speckled hen magners etc etc ?

Thx Steve

Yup you can fit most new caps to commercially brought bottles and a lot of people do

Problem is removing the labels on some of the commercially brought bottles

Can also use Grolsch type bottles with the swing top

Personally I just buy the Plastic 500ml bottles and use them, only around £12 for 24

Bottle cappers are readily available from most home brew shops and you can easily cap old bottles that you have emptied. What a lot of folk do on the forum is to approach your local pub and ask them if you can have any brown bottles that they would be throwing away at the end of the day, maybe initially you might have to accept any bottles they are getting rid of but eventually you can accumulate enough brown bottles to suit you.

I stipulated brown bottles because they work better with home brew than either clear bottles or green bottles, when beer is exposed to sunlight, its called skunking, basically the beer tastes off. The reason for this is that home brew uses real hops in the brew whereas many breweries now use extract of hops which does not react to light in the same way.

Also scrounge round and see if you can get your hands on any swing-top bottles like Grolsch, there is a deal on in some Aldi's just now, they are selling Das Helle German beer for £1.79 in a brown swing top bottles - the beers not bad either :thumb:

It is a bit of a chew removing labels from used bottles, but if you do, go for the bottles with paper label a bit easier to remove than the plastic ones.
On the plus side after a while you will have built up a stash of bottles for your beer, which you can keep reusing with just a wash out and sterilise, you should also sleep better on a night knowing you have done your bit for the environment!!! :hat:

Badger ales have the easiest to remove labels I have ever removed. I would also recommend asking the local pub / brewery about bottles. Friends and family have given me so many, I have considered a dawn raid of the recycling bins on my street but I haven't got their quite yet.

Bulmers & Magners bottles labels just slip off in the dishwasher, pubs tend to have plenty of them and they hold a full pint too :thumb:

Thx everyone for answers etc

I put an ad on local Facebook site etc for bottles ...... Just had a guy message with 50 bottles for free......... Result :D
