The instructions on the Wherry kit say to prime bottles with half a teaspoon of sugar per pint or to use 100g in a barrel. A teaspoon of sugar weighs 4g so I make that a total of 80g for 40 pints. So why the different amount? I'm going to batch prime so should I use 80g or 100g? I've seen a general figure of 85g mentioned. I don't want any bottle bombs.

Using a cooks measuring spoon which is the standard measuring device a half teaspoon measure is 3gms, and is sufficient to prime a 500ml bottle.
If batch priming work on 5-6 gms per litre ( multiply up ). That will be fine for normal carbonation, if for a lager add a bit more as everyone likes a lager fizzy )
You will not make bottle bombs with these amounts.

I use 100g as it's a nice round number. Admittedly, 80 is also a round number but not as round as 100. I don't think it'll make a great deal of difference.
