FACT: I like pretty much all decent beer.

FACT: I have a pretty strong dislike of most stuff that comes from these two breweries with the exception of SN's "Late Red" which is perfectly pallettable.

Does anyone know what it is that these two have in common? Is it a variety of hop they use more than anyone else? Weird combinations of malt?

Just curious...

I got a golf buddy who is a rep for SN, he's offered me a free brewery tour so i'll see what I can find out when I take it up - if you can get to their brewery on the day, I'll see if he can fit more folk in. I like the Red and Spitfire, not really tried any others

As far as I am aware, Badger (Hall & Woodhouse) are still independent, while Shepherd Neame is part of the Banks's / Marston's / Wychwood / Brakspear / Ringwood conglomerate.

I tend to avoid SN, but quite like H&W.

No, Shepherd Neame is still independent and unfortunately for me, as I live in Kent, I'm surrounded by their pubs.

Trying to add more to this post but getting SQL errors.

I love their seasonal brews but the standard fare is, IMHO, pretty awful. Again, I don't know why, but it has a nickname in this part of the world "**** and Screams".

A fellow brewer (ex Dark Star) once described the giant redwood as the largest tree in the world, but the sawdust from even the largest specimen wouldn't be enough to soak up the vomit following a Shepherd Neame brewery tour. (joke, honest!)

I don't like most of them either but I have to say Badgers Golden Glory and Poachers choice are quite distinctive and faves of mine :drink:

 Sorry

The other one which completes the set is Jennings, so I've got confused somewhere, or my local has had a guest beer at some time from outside the group.

Anyway, I like First Gold, Tanglefoot and Blandford Fly but I don't rate Spitfire, Bishop's Finger or any of the foreign lagers they brew under licence.

Gk ipa is drinkable but I won't on principle - the parasitic b'stards.

GK Insipid Pale Ale is not a bad pint, it's just not the pint it should be, I will happily drink it if it's in Good condition, which seems rare these days as it's generally sold in pubs that are not really into their Real Ale.

As for The Shepherd Neame, and Badgers, I have to agree, I am not a fan of most of their produce, with a few exceptions. I find the beers they produce all taste somewhat metallic, if that makes any sense. It's as though I'm drinking the copper, not the beer that was produced in it.

I totally agree with you, it's one of the better casks around when in good fettle....I just have to point for the pint...can't say the name it grates me  :drink:
