hello peeps

i work for aspall an i recently got some freebies as our apple juice only has a 3 months shelf life we had 2 pallets come back with short shelf life not really sure why but thats not for me to question :thumb:

i had 24lt of the stuff coming out of my ear holes so after giving out some to my friends an fam and also had some myself i was left with 5lts the perfect amount to put in a DJ

i thought i had 5lt DJ however i think the ones from wilkos are 4lt as i poured 4lts in an it went upto the shoulder. we tend to have a overfill level on all our products so that tollerance might be why it goes up to the shoulder or maybe thats just the way its supposed to be.

recipe here:

4lt x Aspall English Apple Juice
2tsp yeast nutrient
2tsp youngs yeast

probably a bit too much yeast and nutrient there i imagen it will do either nothing extra or im going to have a mess to clear up. i did something i have not done before on this batch an put the yeast and nutrient in the bottom then topped it up with liquid but i give it a good shake and made sure there was not a heavy deposit on the bottom will that make much difference?

Apart from making my cyder errupt what else is likely to come from using 2tsp of yeast nutrient and dried yeast as most of the DJ recipes on here use 1tsp of each

Since I got free juice I thought I'd experiment :)

Old thread I know, did you ever get around to tasting this? Was it any different at all from using value apple juice?

it was absolutely horrible i made this on advice from the chief cider maker at work we were talking one day about home brew and he mentioned about apples being perfect for alcohol as they already contain a balance of sugar and water.

the recipy above needs something else added to it both in additives and sugar if you do it as it says it will just come out smelling and tasting like vinegar :wha:

Yes that isn't right - if everything was sterile it should have been fine. I don't think the extra yeast would have been a big deal if you racked properly and the nutrient would certainly not be an issue.
