Keir Starmer sacks shadow transport minister -

The TSSA rail union - whose picket line Mr Tarry joined - said it was "ashamed" of Labour.
"If Keir Starmer doesn't understand the basic concept of solidarity on which our movement has been built then he is not worthy of leading our party."

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has sacked a junior shadow transport minister who joined striking rail workers on a picket line.
Ilford South MP Sam Tarry attended the protest at London's Euston station despite Sir Keir calling on his frontbench MPs to stay away.
Labour said he had been fired for making unauthorised media appearances.
Mr Tarry said he had been "standing shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with striking workers".
In a statement Labour said it would "always stand up for working people fighting for better pay, terms and conditions at work".
"This isn't about appearing on a picket line. Members of the front bench sign up to collective responsibility. That includes media appearances being approved and speaking to agreed frontbench positions.
"As a government in waiting, any breach of collective responsibility is taken extremely seriously and for these reasons Sam Tarry has been removed from the frontbench."
Responding to his dismissal, Mr Tarry - a supporter of the former leader Jeremy Corbyn - thanked Sir Keir for "the last two and a half years" on the front bench, but said it was "a real shame" he had been removed for "joining a picket line".
He said he wanted to be "part of a Labour Party that stands in solidarity with workers in their disputes, wherever that may be in this country",
"Real solidarity means not turning our backs on the people that created and made our party and make us strong on a daily basis," he added, warning Labour would struggle to win back power without providing a "really clear.. economic alternative".
He said he had not been told not to appear on a picket in the past day or so.

Labour 'deluded'

The TSSA rail union - whose picket line Mr Tarry joined - said it was "ashamed" of Labour.
General secretary Manuel Cortes said: "Whatever excuses the Labour Party makes about the reasons for Sam being sacked, the reality is that Sam has shown solidarity with his class and we applaud him for that. The Labour Party needs to wake up and smell the coffee.
"If they think can win the next general election while pushing away seven million trade union members, they are deluded.
"We expect attacks from the Tories, we don't expect attacks from our own party. As a Labour-affiliated union, our union is ashamed of the actions of the Labour Party leadership and the anti-worker anti-union message it is sending out.
"If Keir Starmer doesn't understand the basic concept of solidarity on which our movement has been built then he is not worthy of leading our party."

I’m afraid that Mr Starmer is a difficult Labour Party Leader to support; and the latest news does him no favours!
asad.asad.

Whoever leads the Labour Party will be attacked by the Right Wing Media; I just wish that the powers that be within the Party stop making it easy for them!
:hat:

I have been very vocal about him not being the best man for the job he is a Tory in a red tie and his own members are now calling him boring if he is still in the job in 2025 I worry thr tories will win.

Keir is not a Tory, he’s a honest decent man trying to rebuild the Labour Party after Jeremy. By sacking Tarry for breaking party rules he is showing strong leadership as he did when he kicked Jeremy out. He wiped the floor with Boris at the last PMQ’s. Whoever is the next unelected PM in September he will be the next elected PM.

Chumbawamba sang about Tony Blair's Labour party in their cover of Hard Times of Old England. Lyrics still seem pertinent today
The Labour Party you guys want is unelectable, since the war only Attlee, Wilson and Blair have won elections so get real or would you prefer to be so far left you are never going to see a Labour government again.

The problem is he is not getting this across I know far more about what Andy Burnham stands for because he is out there letting everyone know he may not be everyone's cup of tea but I like the guy.
You say he is a decent man how do you know this on 5 live the other day more than one caller asked what Starmer stood for, what are his policies etc and no one could answer.

I also like Andy Burnham but he’s not an MP yet. I think after 70 years many in senior roles at major companies I can judge people and I judge Keir by his words and actions to be the right stuff. We’ve had too many politicians who are all mouth and no trousers but he’s not he’s the real deal.

This is my feelings too. The demographic of the UK is that the working class, unions etc that "core labour" represents is a minority. So if they represent their core base, then they'll not get enough votes to get elected. The only way to get elected (excluding coalitions) would be to move to the centre to attract more middle class voters, but that would be abandoning their core reasons as a party.

The only way Blair won and stayed in power as "new labour" was by shifting to the right and abandoning the base of the party

Ummm - yes - and? As others have pointed out, the world has changed and the "base of the labour party" is trying to go in the other direction. If labour want to get in (or at least provide a credible opposition) they need to be left of centre, not left of Lenin.

No doubt he's a sincere and honest chap.
But what does he stand for?
Before I nail my colours to his mast I need to know what he stands for.

Sorry. Quoted wrong post. Should have been @Agentgonzo and New Labour shifting to the right.

Which pushed the tories further to the right in order to establish "clear blue water" between them and New Labour.

100% agree with this.

I had the same feelings of doubt …

… until SWMBO told me that The Sun (*) had an article about him sacking his Deputy’s (Angela Raynor) boyfriend!

I knew he had sacked a junior minister (Sam Tarry) but I didn’t realise that he was Ms Raynor’s boyfriend. I was conflicted because:
  1. My admiration for Mr Starmer soared because apparently:
    • He had a policy.
    • Had informed Ministers about it.
    • Sacked Mr Tarry for going against the policy; knowing that Tarry was Ms Raynor’s squeeze!
    • Now, The Sun was writing about it as if Mr Starmer was in the wrong!
  2. I wondered why SWMBO had bought a Sun Newspaper? (*)
My admiration for Mr Starmer soared because:
  • He had a Policy that I agreed with and showed that he could be ruthless if its application was challenged.
  • The Sun (like all Right Wing Media) was again attempting to blacken his name.
(*) At the risk of disrupting family life, I asked SWMBO how she managed to read The Sun; and discovered that it was the only newspaper provided for free at the café she had visited for lunch! :D
