these vans are much cheeper in germany. check ebay.de and compare the prices.

if you can handle a lefthand drive then save yourself a few grand and get it from germany. there is some paperwork that needs to be done but it is not that much hastle and well worth the effort.

i know someone who has made quite a few quid buying in germany and selling in uk.

mrs taff and i are planing doing this ourselvs. buying in germany, taking a euro tour and returing home and selling. from what we have been told by our friend we will be odds on to at least pay for our holiday.

however my wife and i speak german which makes the whole idea a bit easier.

I have a 1974 VW Type 2 Late Bay Westfalia and didn't know much about them til we bought it and blimey, is there a lot to learn!

Your budget will dictate what you can look at and then narrow it down from there to what suits your needs, how many you need to sleep, whether you want (or need) to do much work on it and so on.

There are some excellent dealers and then there are some who'll take your money and... well, same as any business.

Take a look at the forums for some advice and get the feel for things before you dive in. But be warned, prices will go up from end of March - camping season starts and everyone wants one when it's warmer, not so many people are happy to scrape ice off the inside of the windows like I do all winter.

I'm a member on http://www.thelatebay.com - give us a look and do some research before you start thinking about parting with money, I could have saved a fair bit if I had! That being said, I absolutely love having the van and so do the kids.

:D

A great machine Rob, owned one for five years and did the county every which way several times. :D :D
It used to take itself down to Devon, once it was on the M5  I had the 1700cc version the bigger the better, 1600s ain't able to pull the skin of a rice pudding
I looked hard to get a good one when I bought it. ;) Not much trouble only a new clutch needed and the box is only held in by four bolts, did the job single handed. :D :D
Only got rid of it cos we needed more room, when the daughter got bigger. She's spread her wings now, so need a camper again :hmm:
Not really, to long in the tooth, me and the vans. They do rot a bit, like most things that old, so beware ;)
Have fun

P.S. You been watching that bloke doing the Country in his "camper van " on the tele ?

Have you gone off the idea of a camper Rob. :)

nope still looking. Has to be original, a bay is ideal. Solid body. Done some research but not seen any yet.

What spec you looking for?

Ideally a westy that has been well restored with a good solid body. Pop top as both me and the missus are over 6ft. Not too bothered with the interior as I can sort that out.

8-10,000 to spend.

Shouldn't be too hard to find, the question is probably going to be the location & price... and whether or not you mind if it's LHD, if you do, then you'll possibly pay more and finding exactly what you want may be a bit harder.

Assume you've been looking at all the VW forums? Probably goes without saying, but be very careful on ebay and also beware of the potential for a stolen one, they have become VERY desirable and quite heavilly targeted for theft in London....

If you're not dead set on a Westy, this pop top doesn't look bad:
