im about to make a connisours wheat beer kit with half wheat Malt extract and half sugar. now i really like hoegarden beer and ve heard its made with orange peal so i was thinking of throwing some in the fv. or would it be a better idea to steep it in some boiling water and add just the steeped water to the fv?

I think that the original beer is flavoured with Curaçao orange (bitter) and coriander.

Have a search on the forum for other's ideas but I boiled up some dried bitter orange peel (available from some HBS) and some (not too much) crushed coriander seeds in about a litre of water than strained it and added it to the extract in the fermenter.

I'd avoid the dried peel from shops as most I've seen has to much pith and to little zest. As a slightly mad idea I've heard of people adding high quality marmalade as it contains boiled orange zest of the right type, sugar and not much else.

hoegaarden , you want around 30g of orange peel pop in oven to dry out a little , and around 30g of cracked cori seed (seeds rolled with a rolling pin in a tea towel) boil liquid up and add orange and cori for around 1 min yes thats all 1 min sieve liquid and add to fv , it will be hoegaarden ish cuz you need a certain yeast and flaked wheat , torrified wheat etc etc but it should be good as is

Half wheat and half sugar ? What would the true connisours have to say about that ?

I just can not get myself to tell other people : "Come have a beer with me, I made it myself" if sugar's gone into it.

I've only done one Hoegaarden type brew, but used half wheat and half barley malt.

I also went the route of oven-drying some orange peel and steeping this in some boiling water with some crushed corriander seeds. Came out very good.

Yeah it's the muntons kit.

Let's just say it didn't go well!

I made it up short to about 18ltrs and left it in the kitchen last night and it looked fine this morning. Now on my way home from work I had a phone call of swmbo saying it had frothed over onto the kitchen floor

Then to top it off the new kitten (who is 11 weeks old) has decided to take a :drink: of the liquid and was  on the kitchen floor.

Let's just say I've seen swmbo happier
