OK, coming towards bottling time for my second brew. This time, I'm bottling in to glass bottles... Last time, I found that quite a bit of my time was taken by sterilising, and I'm looking to get it done in as fast a time as possible...

So, I was looking to bottle tomorrow morning, and wondered whether I'd be ok to add sterilising solution to the bottles tonight. My thought, was to add approx 1/4 teaspoon of vwp per bottle, and fill up with warm water. I would then leave all of the bottles with the sterilising solution overnight, and then give a good shake in the morning to ensure it's all sterile, and then pour away solution and rinse a few times after I've batch primed the brew...

Is that possible to do that? Or is it not a good idea to do that? Just that sterilising about 12 pet bottles took long enough itself, so sterilising nearly 40 glass bottles will take quite a while, and so if I can speed up that part, it will help loads tomorrow...

Thanks in advance for any ideas :)

Your best way is to was them clean then when you are ready to bottle dunk into a solution of no rinse sanitiser like videne as you are bottling. This way the neck and rim are also sterilised. Also don't forget to sterilize the lids. :thumb:

That's a good point...

Using a capper, so I still need to sterilise the caps? Assume putting them in the fv whilst sterilising that ready for the batch prime will be ok?

All have been cleaned before hand as I give them a good swirling out and ensure nothing in there when I used them... So, just need a clean out.

This videne ... can it be bought at any chemist? Or is it a specialist chemist type thing?

You should always sterilise the caps, regardless of how they are being fitted. Their internal surface will be in contact with your still-fermenting beer.

You will need to sterilize I usually put the in a jug with sterilizer. Videne can be ordered from a chemist but order the antiseptic solution not the surgical scrub, that has stuff in it to soften surgeons hands.

Just this minute finished bottling 42 pints of Coopers Irish stout ;) I filled the bath to about 8'' with a mild bleach solution at 7pm when I got in from graft and dropped my 45 clean bottles (always do a few over just in case) in there for an hour. Rinsed thoroughly and filled them and crown corked the lot, just finished....

I don't think there is an easy way to sterilise - it's a necessary pain but it's sharp forgotten when you uncap the nectar in a few weeks time

Until the next batch needs doing..........

Of you are swilling caps around your fv watch out for them scratching the plastic! I fill a Pyrex jug with starssan and just pick em out as I bottle. D

Yep do mine the same ;)

It takes me about 45 minutes to sterilize 40 glass bottles , i use a bottle washer with Videne in it , quick rinse in a bucket on water ... then place them on a bottle tree to dry off ;)

Damn you tapatalk and iPhone! All my bottles get washed in a renovated dishwasher then afew squirts of starssan then tipped upside-down before bottling. Nice and easy. I don't bottle much now I have a cornie setup. Just the excess of what ever kegs I am filling. D

I've used the bath a few times before. Only problem I found was when I was re-using bottles that had labels on. Bits of paper and scum ended up floating everywhere, so I didnt really feel like I was being very effective.

Good approach for bottles that have been properly clean first though. :thumb:

I use a 60l barrel to leave the soak of labels and cr*p etc using oxy, but once they are clean they get dunked in a bucket of videne as said for a minute or so then filled.

Looking online (as haven't gotten to local chemist yet) appears videne is prescription only?! Also, what's the diff between a videne antiseptic solution and a videne tincture?!

Also, is a 10% solution ok?

Nope, that's what I do. I use 1 litre plastic bottles so they float. I submerge each in turn to fill them as far as I can and upright them for 20 minutes. Then the labour intensive part is emptying them out (along with the bath full) and rinsing each under the bath cold tap. The hand basin makes a good place to dry them as long as it's been washed with some bleach first.

The caps float about during the entire process, so they get bleached and rinsed, then dropped into a bowl for bottling.

1.25ml to the litre. Get yourself a small Syringe put it in your shirt pocket for all to see, walk into McDonalds and ask to use the toilet. (Last part optional but VERY amusing)
