Hello all
I'm currently half way through my brew day with #3 Tribute clone. Whereas I've changed the malt, water profile and put in some extra hops on the hopstand I'm still going with an 80 minute mash and 90 minute boil. Obviously this puts considerable time on to the day....
As long as I crunch the numbers to get the same IBU will I get the same result? Also, reducing the mash time to 60 minutes..
Cheers
Clint

* not an expert *

Do you mean if you reduce 80/90 to 60/60?

Your boil off rate is important here (as well as the bitterness calc) You would boil off less water and therefore end up with a more dilute brew.

Or have i misunderstood your question?

If you use an app, change the boil from 90 to 60 it should tell you what the expected SG are and therefore what the difference in ABV would be.

I imagine that if your boil off is, say, 3 litres / hour, you would lose that 3 litres instead of 4.5 litres in 90 mins.

I can't do that maths, but I can't imagine that 1.5 litres in a ~23 litre batch would make a huge difference.

Someone will be along momentarily, who can do this shiz in their head.

I now do a 45 minute mash and a 45 minute boil and have noticed no difference at all and feel i've gained some extra life too :)

Just my experience. About a month ago, just as my mash water got up to temperature, my wife asked me how long I was going to be as she wanted us to go out! Knowing the real answer was about 4 to 5 hours I stupidly said “about two hours”. Now I needed to reach for plan B. So, I added an extra 200g MO and mashed for just 30 minutes instead of 60 and adjusted my sparge water and early hops for a 30 minute boil. I then chilled the wort to about 23 degrees, put the lid on it and was out of the house within less than two hours. it was at 20 degrees when we got back so I transferred it to the FV and pitched the yeast. I’ve got this Dead Phoney Club on tap now and it seems absolutely fine to me!

Back when I could still do all-grain I routinely did 45/45 with good results.

Shame you can no longer do all grain, I wonder how low you can go to still get good results, maybe 30 minutes of both ??
I only do about 10 lts BiaB so given the small volumes i'd assume 30 mins would work ok, maybe I need to try it out :)

I generally do 45/45 and have done for quite a while getting approx 72% Eff. More recently probably for the last 10 brews I have started doing a 90 min mash with a 10 min mash out and wrap Overnight to complete the brew the next morning with a Eff of at least 78%. I do this Overnight mash to save on the brew day time and find I can just mash in and generally leave it to do its own thing with the settings on my All in One Brew machine so does not really encroach much on my evening but saves loads on the brew day

I brewed yesterday..and have another in the brew fridge...I'm tempted to try a 45/45...only fv space I got is a quiet corner onthe kitchen worktop...

Go for it Clint you may lose a little EFF in the mash and then you may not depends on the grains, I tend to find Lager malts lose a little and Pale malts are about the same however if you are like a lot of brewers nowadays who tend to add late additions or whirlpool you do not need to boil as long as historically thought. I have not found any difference and do not do traditional bittering at the start of a boil anymore so that I can load a lot of hops late and get my bittering from them.
You will save at least 30 mins on a brew day. If you are really wanting to do long mashes do overnight as I do so the longer mash does not encroach on a full brew day

Well...water is on and grains weighed. I've had a look....it's gonna be an AIPA with pale,Munich, wheat,a bit of crystal and some oats. Hops...magnum for bittering then azacca and cascade late on and hop stand with dry hop of the same, yeast US 05. I'll stick to my usual hour of each as I'm in no rush today...yet!

Go for it @Clint ...

I've been doing 30 min boils since end 2019, so about 30 AG BIAB batches in that time. I've noticed no difference* - but of course you do need to add a bit more of your bittering hops to compensate, though it's really not much. And of course you need to factor in that less boil time means less boil off.

At the same time I also switched to 30 min mashes - again, no difference*.

(* Except getting a big chunk of time back!)

Actually I've found anywhere from 30 mins to 2 hours mash doesn't make any difference to efficiency. (Mind you, now I think about it, this could be in part because I'm doing full volume, so I have a much thinner mash???)

Around the same time I also switched from mash + dunk sparge to full-volume no-sparge. Now this did make a difference - my efficiency dropped a bit, but this is easy to compensate by adding a bit more grain (really not much).
