I am trying to establish at what point I get my gravity reading pre and post boil. The temp has an effect. If I pull it straight from the sparged wort at a temp of around 65°C there is a different reading when it actually cools. What is the true gravity for my ABV calculation?

Razzer you need to go to 'Calculators' at top of the above page and select 'Hydrometer Temperature Correction Calculator'

Let's guess your gravity reading at 65C is 1030. So you enter 1030 and 65. Click 'calculate' and it will give you 1048 for the cooled wort.

If after brewing, your final sg is 1008, a drop of 40 should give you a final abv of 5.4%
