I'm fairly new to home brewing and my brew has been going for 6 days, a day longer than stated but it has been a little cool in the spare room with it sitting at 20-22c. My question is what should the sg be at and which way will it go. It's currently at 0.140.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
 
Leave it go for a few more days and check the gravity again mate.

Try and get as much out of it as you can. If it gets a little cooler, stick a quilt or a few blankets round it.

Would you care to try again with that gravity reading because it makes no sense.

If you mean 1.140 then fermentation has failed. How much sugar did you start with and have there been signs of activity?

If you mean 1.014 then it's heading in the right direction but needs a few days more, it should finish somewhere around 0.990
 
Sorry I meant 1.040

I used 8 kilo of sugar and within 24 hours there was a white foam on the top, now there's just a few bubbles every now and again (15-20 seconds)
 
The basic instructions say nothing about sg readings and I wasn't sure if it finished higher due to the sugar content. Like I said I am fairly new to this game having only one brew under my belt :D
 
Give this a little longer, ideally it should finish at 999 or less.
Think the packet says its ready in 5 days(I think), but that's more than likely in a fermentation fridge.
 
If you added 8kg of sugar to 21 litres of water you should have 25.8 litres of wash (because sugar ‘bulks’ volume by 600ml per kilo or half a pint per pound).

That would have given you an OG of 1.112

I've only done a couple of sugar washes but they both finished at about 0.984, which is the lowest I've ever seen a hydrometer go.

Give it a few days more and wrap the bucket in a quilt or sleeping bag.
 
Ok so it's been on 11 days, sg has been sat at 1.010 for the last 3 days although there is still some bubbles every few minutes, unfortunately the crappy LCD thermometer stuck to the side of the fv has decided to show nothing but brown on ALL the temps so I don't know what the temp is sat at, I would guess around 20c so I know it will take a bit longer but I've worked it out to be 13% as it stands but surely by now it should be a little higher! could I pop a little yeast nutrient in to get the yeast a little more active or should I just go ahead and siphon it in to the second fv anyway?
 
If it has an OG of 1.112 and finishes as low as 0.984 that would still only give you
abv 16.8 %

I'm just thinking that the information on the packet may not be correct ? .....

The standard dose of 6 kgs of plain sugar into 25 litres total
will give you the 14% recipe.
If you instead go for 8 kgs of sugar
the turbo yeast will automatically go for 20% in 5 days
