After topping up my TC today and changing the airlock I began to wonder why there were fermenting bubbles inside the demijohn but there was no airlock activity

:hmm: I began to think it must be a leak somewhere or a blockage and my airlock bung would shoot out any moment

I had an idea to put some water or sanitising liquid around the hole in the rubber bung where the airlock inserts to see if I could see bubbles :wha: and lo and behold I could see bubbles coming up through the liquid :sulk:
I pushed the airlock in further and it seems to have solved the problem.

BUT! I tested my other demijohns even though they were bubbling fine just to be sure, and to my amazement three of them showed bubbles leaking out between the airlock and bung

Pushing these in a lot further solved this... I think

Anyway it's made me a bit OCD about testing them all now as I change them, and by the pics ive seen on here some people only just push their airlock bubblers into the bung.. So have a check and see.. It may be just me but I thought I would let you know just in case :)

Thanks
Ade

All my locks go right through the bung.
I sometimes get leaks round the outside of the bung.
It doesn't much matter, as long as nothing big can fall in, the generated CO2 is protective in itself

Do you take your airlocks out of their bungs or leave them in all the time, some can be a pain to get out and can twist or break  I guess it's cleaner to remove them from the bungs.

I have the same problem with a brew i started this morning but given the time it can wait till tomorrow, Dave

I leave them in all the time. They get a good soak in sanitiser and a good rinse before use. So far no probs.
Just had two soaking in one of the Oxy cleaners to get rid of **** from an overflow

I also leave mine in, used to take them out each time but then realised it wasn't necessary. After use I give them a good run through on the head of the tap with hot water and then leave to dry, before use the same and sterilise if they have had anything nasty on them, no issues so far!!

when i put the airlock in the bung for the first time i use a wee bit of vaseline on it, this makes sure any gaps are plugged, i then just leave the whole thing assembled and sterilise as needed..
