guys, starting a beer using a coopers starter kit. don't have an air lock yet- if I start if going, should I just leave the lid cracked- then when the airlock comes (hopefully in day or two) close lid and fit the airlock?

If your lid's like mine, you can close it and the excess gas will still find a way out. Or you can lift it slightly anytime it gets drum-tight.
I did a small experimental brew in a PET once and kept the top screwed on, just releasing a bit whenever the bottle got taut. Worked fine.

if you got hole in lid do like some other people do get some plastic tube put in hole in lid get some sort of bottle with water in it place other end in water hay presto air lock sorted :thumb:

As oldbloke says snap the lid on, they are rarely airtight :thumb:
I do not use airlocks on my FV's they are not necessary ;)
Here's my latest 60L brew

not an airlock in sight

I never bother with airlocks for beer. I OPEN ferment with just a tea towel over the top to keep the "nasties" & dog :D out :thumb:

Never had any bother with this method. I only use airlocks on DJ's when making wine for SWMBO
