Just weighed out my grains for brewing today and noticed the flaked barley is infested with weevils!

I had the FB in three different zip lock bags and all three are infested but none of the rest of my grain seems to be effected and everything is in seperate bags so hopefully shouldnt get an infestation if i chuck the FB out now. Ive had the FB for quite while now so Im wondering if the current heat wave/age of the grain has caused this

I didnt notice the weevils till I'd tipped the weighed out FB into the rest of my grain for the brew. So Im still brewing with it - extra protien I guess :laugh8:

I never check my grain. Are they easy to see? I guess they were present when you bought the grain?

Weevil Safety. Weevils, whether in larval or adult stage, are not harmful to humans or animals. Although it may seem unsavory to you, they can be eaten along with any food they have infested without causing any ill effects. ... If weevils eat the grains and die, observers know pesticides are present

Yeah, their pretty easy to see. Their about 2mm length. They definately werent in the grain when I got it as I've been using that batch of FB for months as I bought so much of it (3kg iirc). I think the heat has caused eggs, which would have been in the FB to hatch.

Been doing a bit of reading whilst I wait for the mash. If I put the bags of FB in the freezer it'll kill them (and any eggs) so I can carry on using the FB and not have to throw it away. So that's what I've done
It seems once a threshold of heat and humidity is reached then weevil eggs hatch in the grain. Seeing as I've never had this problem before it's a fair bet that the heatwave we've been having is what's caused this

Thank god it's cooled down in Wales. I haven't long had a delivery of in excess of 40kg grain
I'd imagine that this is confined to unmalted grains, and the cleaning and malting process would rid grain of weevil eggs.

Appently not, from the reading I've been doing in the last couple of hours. It seem ALL grain has weavil eggs in them. It just needs the right conditions for them to hatch

All grain contains a certain percentage of insect matter, frogs, voles etc. So much for veganism.
Or do they imagine that combine harvesters have little pixies that run in front of the blades and remove all the little creatures and shazzam them to a place of safety?
