Right its been a few weeks since i made the first AG brew but with moving house and only having broadband installed recently its taken a while to get this posted.

The morning went very well with a 5am start and it took about 6.5 hours finishing at 11:30ish getting changed and straight up the pub for lunch!!

I did have a few issues along the way so if i tell them i'm hoping i can be pointed in the right direction for the next one.

Tim Taylor's Landlord 23l
Pale Malt 4250g
Black Malt 30g

East Kent Goldings 23g 90min
Bobek 34g 90min

bobek 27g 10min

I used the guided tour from the forum as my guide so the first thing to work out was water loss, i worked out the following:

Boiler Dead Space - 1.7l
Loss to hops - 0.5l
Loss to boil off - 3l
Loss to mashtun - 1.6l
Loss to grain - 4.25l
Loss to liquor tank - 1.7l

so 23l + 12.75l = 35.75l

I know the loss in the mashtun, boiler and liquor tank are fixed but do the losses for grain, hops and boil off look right?

I then mashed the grain in 10.625l of liquor water ( 2.5l per 1kg Grain)

After the run off and sparging i managed to collect 23l of wort with the liquor tank running dry which i thought wasnt that great. I then boiled the wort with the hops but by 1hr15mins i was down to 15l, so chilled off early. After the liquor was in the FV the gravity read 1050 which was higher than expected so to water it down i added 2.5l of cooled boiled water. I bought the grain with Nottingham yeast but decided on the day to use a sachet of Hamstead Brew Centre's Design a Brew yeast. Finishing gravity was 1004 after leaving it for two weeks, its its now finally in the garage in a kingkeg playing the waiting game. It already tastes amazing, so much better than any of the kits i've made before. Just need to juggle family life to get AG2 on the go.

Hope you enjoy the brewporn to follow, and if anyone has got any ideas where i went wrong with the liquor quantities i'd love to know.

Congrats Mr F on your 1st AG :thumb:

How did you sparge? I have the same set up as you by the looks; after using the HLT for the sparge liquor I then to fill the HLT up with 30L and heat to 85C, and sparge for 45-60mins keeping about 50mm of liquid on top of the grain bed, keep sparging till you have enough liquor or it is at SG 1008 (true). It would appear that you didn't sparge enough.
 
Hi Ed thanks for the comments, i calculated 36 odd Litres for both mash and fly sparge, plus i do think i ran it off a little too fast as well. So you think i need more water for sparging? i actually think i do too. I will adjust my settings for the next brew hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

Mr F everyones equipment is different and even different days make changes, pressure, wind temp etc. Seems it wasn't a bad first brew, now you can start calibrating your equipment.

for starters add at least another 7 litres to the HLT to get 30 l I used to go for 33 as I had high boil losses, you can do this after the mash has started if there is not enough room premash.

you have nearly 30% boil losses (8L) I assume you are running a 2.4kw element, nothing wrong with a good rolling boil just add more liquor if it gets to low.

and see how it goes next time and readjust accordingly

Looking good. Seems like TTLL is about as popular as oatmeal stout on this forum right now. Never tasted it, but it must have that little something as so many are willing to have a go at it :thumb:
 
good stuff! I did ttl recently in an almost identical set up. i have quite high efficiency, I think this is due to my calculating the grain quantity to the most the tun will hold, about 8Kg. Generally thats 46Lt brewlength. Just nice in a 60Lt boiler.
 
Like other people have said every ones kit is different and you will get use to your losses and stuff, I always heat extra treated water for the sparge and run this off into a spare FV so that i can back liquor if the boil has been a bit fierce then you can top up to 23litres if you like. Well done on the first brew though :thumb: What yeast did you use 1004 is quite low for a final gravity?
 
Cheers for all the advice guys. Definately think i'll be keeping liquor water to one side during the boiling to keep it topped up. I didnt know you could do that, so thanks for that. I have a 3kw immersion heater in my boiler hence the heavy boil off.

Rich i used Hamstead Brewing Centre's Design a brew yeast. Its closest match would be Nottingham being very neutral, but DAB yeast sets nice and hard. I've used the yeast 4 times before with the DAB kits, but never got it so low. It was down to 1010 after 3 days but leaving it in the FV for two weeks brought it down that low.

Lordy, I'll bet that's going to taste fabulous :thumb: And once I've got my AG setup going I'll be pinching your recipe. Look forward to hearing what the finished result is like.
 
Your mash may have been a little on the cool side, did you measure the temp before the sparge? A few degrees under would allow more fermentables to develop (so i believe) so a hotter mash will encourage a beer with more body and a higher FG, the beer will be great though :thumb: Whats AG#2 going to be :cool:
 
Rick you might be on to something, i cannot for the life of me remember what the temp was but i do remember it being low. I will have to keep a careful eye on the mashing temps on the second AG brew. The next one is called Christmas Cracker. I bought it and the TTL as kits from the worcester hop shop as they seemed reasonably priced kits and saved me deciding what to brew then buying all the grain separately.
