AG v kits

So, opening the question out a bit, would most of you who brew AG generally consider your own brewed beer to be of superior quality/taste to commercial real ale then?

I don't ask that in a sceptical way - I just want to know what to expect when i start AG brewing after Christmas!

If it helps, I dry cure my ownstreaky bacon at home (it's ridiculously easy!) and it tastes way, way better than anything you can buy in the supermarket and probably all but the best quality drycure bacon in the butchers, and at a much lower cost. if I can get that with beer, I'll be well happy!

Well yes, certainly if you're talking about mass produced beers which are on every supermarket shelf.

As I see it, most commercial breweries are run by accountants, so they are going to want to get every last gram of fermentables out of the grain, and probably stretch things out even further by adding sugar, but if I want to use 6kg of malt to a 25 litre brew and stop the sparge when I've got all the goodness out that I need, that's my prerogative. Likewise, I can mess around with hops to get exactly what I want.



PS: And I'm just a winemaker who does a bit of brewing on the side, I know nothing compared to many of the brewers on this forum.
 
Without coming across as big headed or a know it all I do believe my beers are better than most I've bought over the years, not all.... but most :)

The key to an home brewer brewing top quality beers is to buy fresh malt and well kept vacuum packaged hops from suppliers recommended by members on here and the forum sponsors above.

I think I see what you're saying. A half decent AG home brew will be the unadulterated,real taste of beer as it was intended to be. Commercial beers will always be a comprimise to an extent :hmm: Although, I have to say that there are a few that are superb, so if it's possible to better that with homebrewing I need to start ASAP!
 
My beers taste like good hand pulled ales even the bad ones, they do not quite reach the polish and condition of excellent beers but an excellent beer is only that way for a fleeting moment. I feel the need to try a cask and see if I can match them.
