Today's effort is Mary Hinge's Spiced Orange Ale!

3.5kg Marris otter
0.3kg Crystal 60L
0.1kg Rolled oats

20g bramling x as FWH
30g Fuggle 90mins
30g Fuggle 5mins
30g Fuggle to dry hop

Peel of 5 oranges at 10 and 5 mins
Tablespoon of bashed corriander seed at 5 mins

T58 yeast

Struggled a bit with this one. Woke up at 5:30 with the taste of last night's rum still on me. Struggled to hit the mash temp then said "feck it! I'm too drunk for this crap" and went back to bed for a few hours.

Now doing a batch sparge.

Not having a good one. Got distracted while heating the sparge water.... it boiled..... switched off the elements then lifted the lid and scalded my fingers with the steam!

OG is 1.040. Bit higher than expected but hey-ho.

Definite orange flavour to the wort. Corriander not so much but hopefully that will come through when the yeast has done its business.

I'm hoping that it will have that lovely fuggley vegetal earthy depth, enhanced by the corriander and pepperyness of the the T58, all set off by the marmalade flavour of the orange peel.

I'm weighing up whether to use Amarillo as a dry hop instead of fuggle.... :wha:

Couple of wort shots to follow.

Note the hops monstering away in the middle-ground!

Cracked open the lid to dry hop and hells teeth the sulphur coming off this one! Smells like the cat dropped his guts.

Thats T58 for you though, or so I'm told.

Dry hopped with 50g Amarillo.

Well the sulphur smell was nothing to worry about after all.

Just bottled this (using proper glass bottles for the first time, I feel no end the pro) and while its still a bit green Mary Hinge smells amazing! I'm going to go put my whole head in the empty fv now! :D

This is shaping up to be a good one!

Its crystal clear, thanks partly to the chitosan I used, and its just starting to come into maturity.

Lovely smell. The orange and corriander together with the Amarillo dry hops and T58 almost smell like cannabis (not that I know what that smells like, ahem :? ), theres still some pretty harsh tannins going on in there but they're softening out nicely and adding to the body as they do so.

Will have to make this again sometime but maybe a bit stronger. I reckon even my gay friends will like this, if I serve it over ice!

Just ordered grain for this from the Hop and Grape as I'm going to have a shunt at it on Friday. I'm quite looking forward to it!
