Mash Schedule: BIAB, Light Body
Total Grain Weight: 7.30 kg
----------------------------
Name Description Step Temperat Step Time
Saccharification Add 33.86 l of water at 68.6 C 64.4 C 120 min
Mash Out Add 0.00 l of water and heat to 75.6 C 75.6 C 10 min

I'll be testing out the BIAB brewsheet for this but already I found a bit of a glitch - massive hop additions freak out the water calculations, telling me to add around 10l more than I think I'll actually need...

...However if any of you have experience of massive hop additions (there's 400g going in here!) and the amount it absorbs I'd like your thoughts!! Beersmith says 34l to start with on the settings that have been about right for the last couple of brews.

looks a belter :thumb: I use loss to displacement and absorption of hops of 1.6L per 100g of hops

405g of hops in a 25 litre brew! then dry hopping it!  nice one man. i was going to say you'll be losing about 4-5 litres just due to the hops!

Cool, I'm working on five litres, I might bump it up to six...

I just love Brewdog's Hardcore and this thing is supposed to come out somewhere in that range... So the ABV is similar as is the IBU and colour. It uses the same malts as they do but different hops... just because I've got some big bags of them!

I thought I'd best go with their marketing shtick for it... Hop it to hell, hop it some more then dry hop the hell out of it...

It should be about right for balmy autumn evenings I reckon.

Oh and Abey... Look again at the size of the brew... I'm only expecting to bottle 19l!!

Looks pretty epic, I read some where that over 100 IBUs your tounge can't tell the difference, however I think it's a theory well worth testing! I do wonder how accurate the brewing software is when you do a brew that is at the far end of the curve. Best of luck, hope your arms are up to pulling the bag, T

 I've pulled a 5.5kg so far... Shouldn't be too much worse. It was the sole reason for scaling the brew back by a gallon though!!

Missed my pre boil gravity by a country mile! -12 points! So a half kilo of DME and a half kilo of demerara now in the boil... :thumb:

...and my digi thermometer is toast... it tells me I'm boiling at 110... I know it's a strong wort but that's just miles out. Spirit one says 104...

...bugger. Makes me wonder if I've just mashed it at 60C...

All done and I got about 16.5l at 1.084 so I've added a couple of litres taking it back down to 1.080.

Happy with it, the wort tastes utterly stunning. Bitter as Vicky Pryce and hoppy as Satan's Frog Pond.

9 full bottles and 2 half litres from the wine was a decent result too... :thumb:

And now that I've sat down...

Everything went pretty well except:

1) Missing Pre-boil gravity by 12 points despite mashing for nearly two and a half hours. Forgot to ask Rob for fine crush which probably didn't help...
2) Boiling off more than I budget still - need to up the rate a bit more
3) I need to stop doing so much other stuff on brewdays. I'm knackered!!!

Really very chuffed with the wort though, it is seriously tasty.

Well brewed. Looks like a monster of a beer!

Did the chicken go in the boil or at flameout ? ;-)

The "Cock Ale" thread did cross my mind...

It didn't, however, go in the beer. It went in me. :thumb:

Looks a belter Calum, and not too far off my NewOrder IIPA which I did a few weeks back. That was only a 13L batch though, and I had similar issues as you re the under-efficiency. DME came to my rescue too, and it looks a similar colour.

Mines been in the bottles for about three weeks now, another week and then I'll put them in the cool to start absorbing the CO2.

Let me know if you fancy a swapsie later on - mine probably won't be ready for drinking until at least June/July, but if you are up for it, PM me and we'll get something sorted.

This looks great, trying to come up with a recipe ATM with a similarly intensive hop schedule. Does any one know where I could buy just the hops I need rather than filling my freezer with leftovers (obviously I don't mind having a freezer full of hops but 'certain people' do ;).)
