Wowzers, what a brew day. As you may have read, I was stuck for a recipe for today so bunged in some stuff to Beersmith and came up with a monster! Unfortunately, I didn't have as much of some ingredients as I thought I had so the recipe got tweaked along the way and I used Beersmith to keep me right and keep note of what the hell I was up to!
So, without further a do, I present to you Deaf Kev's IPA. There's a few odd measurements (36g Challenger, 7g Progress, for example) and these are because I was simply using stuff up. I've had some hops kicking around in the freezer for about a month and fancied clearing as many out as possible in on brew. I also wanted a very high ABV beer and wanted the colour to be around 10 EBC. In summary I wanted a strong hop monster with a blonde/light colour. Off we go :
Assumed 65% eff'ceny
6.5kg Marris Otter
0.3kg Torrified Wheat
36g Challenger @ 90 mins
25g Progress @ 90mins
41g Northern Brewer @ 60 mins
20 Progress @ 20 mins
20g Progress @ 10 mins
7g Progress @ flameout
25g Cascade at flameout
Wyeast American Ale.
So Beersmith showed me 20L @ 1070 with a colour of 11 EBC and a bitterness of 83 IBU's! Woosh! Let's do it.........
Uninspiring grain shot
Mash on
A wee bit warm, but no big deal
Loss over the 90 mins
Clear runnings :
Sparging
Getting there :
Boil on
Cooling the wort
Break forming and dropping
Crap
Wee bit short on volume but not bothered as the hops have obviously affected this. No big deal and a wee learning for me.
Colour
1070 bang on
