I've had a thoroughly enjoyable day today producing my first AG beer, its been a fairly long brewing day, i started at 10am and finally pitched my yeast and left it to do its thing about 4pm this afternoon.
Ok it has been a bit more work than making a kit beer but it has been so much more satisfying knowing i have 'made my own' beer from scratch. Cant wait to taste it!!
I kept it simple for my first attempt, Maris otter, a little crystal & amber malt, Fuggles and EK Golding hops (based loosely on a recipe i had found) and used Brewmate for all the calculations. I set my efficiency at 65% giving me an OG of 1.045. The brew came out at 1.050 so i worked out that my efficieny was actually 73%, if i've used the calculator correctly i'm pleased with that result.
Sorry there are no pictures of my first brew, but i was too busy concentrating on what i was doing to be worrying about photos.
Anyone who is making kit beer but thinking about going AG i really recommend giving it a go, its really rewarding and gives a great sense of achievement on completion, i'm sure even more so if the beer tastes good too lol.
Finally, thanks to all you fellow brewers who gave me tips and advice, it is alot less daunting starting out AG knowing you guys are willing to share your experience with newbies like myself.
Cheers Mark. :
