After brewing from kits for the last 9months or so I decided it was time to step over to the darkside. I've been making the equipment following Chard's Instructable, and opted for one of the recipe kits from The Malt Miller.

3.5kg Pale Malt
230g Crystal Malt
115g Wheat Malt

100g Fuggles (90mins)
15g Goldings (90mins)
10g Goldings (10mins)
10g Cascade (10mins)

Final Volume: 23 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.032
Final Gravity: 1.002
Alcohol Content: 4%ABV
Total Liquor: 34.3 Litres

I ended up adding more water to the boiler as the hops were boiling to keep the final volume to 23l. Probably added about 4-5l in total, but more than happy with 4% as the final outcome.

Can't seem to get the photos to embed for some reason, but there's some up here for anyone who fancies a look.

It took a couple of days to start fermenting due to my house being pretty cold, but once I finally relented and switched the heating on things started ticking over nicely. It's been fermenting for 12 days or so now so going to bottle today. The recipe also says to dry-hop with 10g Cascade and 10g Goldings, but I'm going to try bottling half without dry-hopping to see how much difference this makes.

Nice work,

If you take your time and think things through the switch to AG really isn't that difficult or expensive.
I'm doing things on a shoestring and having great results

What a superb recipe for your first AG brew  it`ll taste amazing well done on the brew - whats next?

Cheers mate. Not 100% sure yet. I've got enough of the above to do another batch, but I notice that it's mostly the same ingredients for "Big Kenny", so was thinking of giving that a go. Any other suggestions?

kenny is a great brew - apart from that the beauty of homebrewing means you can brew whatever you like :thumb: I like hoppy IPAs but today i`m brewing a 10% stout :D

Gutted. Just had to tip away about 15l as it had developed a white film on top while dry-hopping.

Had a quick search and sounds like it's definitely mould. Can't think how it would've got contaminated as everything was sterilised prior to use, muslin was soaked in boiling water for 10mins......dunno.

Ah well, still got 10 botles that I bottled before the dry-hopping. Wish I'd bottled more though!

Next time just skim the mold and bottle it any way. :thumb: Dont let a bit of mould stop your brewing. . . unless it really does smell and taste foul.

Excellent Lobes! Sorry to hear about the mold, but don't let it keep you from brewing. "A way out" is something that's seemingly extremely hard to comprehend in these quarters, I've learned.
