A homebrewing mate and I have decided to create our own celebratory Ashes brew by amending a kit brew to personalise it a bit.

We've narrowed it down to getting a Coopers Australian Lager, and adding some typically English flavourings (It just seems appropriate!).

Does anyone have any good suggestions of hops/flavours to add to our brew, and how to do it? This'll be our first time doing this, and I can see it slipping into full AG mode soon enough!

I'm more partial to the lighter ales (Summer Lightning, Empire IPA) but am open to suggestions!

You can't get more traditionally English than Fuggles :thumb:
Dissolve a tablespoon of the goo from the can into a litre of (de chlorinated)water and boil 20g of fuggles in it for 15 minutes.
Strain out the hops and add the resulting liquid to the fermenter.
Then once fermentation is over, place another 25g of fuggles into a boiled muslin bag or the foot end of a pair of clean tights and dry hop for another 7 days.
That'll do it :D
 
If it was a grain brew I would have suggested Smoked Malt :D Of course there is always Liquid smoke from BBQ suppliers.

Of course the juice from some grapes with lemon juice could also be considered appropriate.

Alternatively steep some Goldings (30g) in a pint of hot water with a tsp of the malt extract from the kit for 15-30 minutes before straining it back into the FV

Good idea if I was serving to to Aussies, but this is to bask in our (bound to be shortlived) glory!

So, Fuggles or Goldings it is then. Any other suggestions?

Would a bit of both be too much? Perhaps starting with one would be better, to know what the effect is on the brew.

hehe... I like the idea of a celebratory 'ashes' brew! Good stuff!

I just kicked off an IPA brew yesterday from a kit... I'm planning on dry-hopping with some fuggles hops after primary fermentation.

Hope yours goes well.
