When adding yeast to Beer kits is it best to just spinkle the yeast on the surface and just leave it, or is it best to stir in the yeast? I have noticed some instructions in the kits say to stir.. however I have also been told its best to just sprinkle on the surface and leave it before sealing the fermenting bucket.. Can anyone advise what is best to do?

Thanks

I like to get a bit of air in the mix before adding the yeast. I give it a good stir with a sterile spoon then when its still swirling I add the dry yeast

I always make a slurry with dried yeast now. I make it as follows:

Put 100ml of 20-25C water in a sterile bowl.
Add the yeast and let it all drop on its own.
Wait 10-15 mins.
Stir with a sterile spoon, and drop straight in the FV.

This way you rehydrate the yeast with only water, as dried yeast will suck up anything which can stress it. Also if you have a froth on the top of your brew (well aerated), it will drop straight through that into the wort and lead to less of a lag.
