Hey guys!

Can anyone help with a spot of maths please? I'm not normally too bad with maths but this is foxing my brain!

If I have two different drinks with different ABV's, what is the calculation to work out the new ABV when you mix them together?

Use:
V1xC1 +V2xC2 = V3xC3

where v is volume and c is concentration (ABV)

e.g. If you mix 500ml of 10% wine with 750ml of 12% wine:

500x 10 + 750x12= 1250 x c3

(500x10 + 750 x12)/1250 = c3

11.2% =C3
I’ve been doing this a total arseabout way before now. Working out the alcohol volume in each solution in ml from the %abv, adding that volume together, working out what % that is of the total volume. I shall be saving this formula, much neater and fewer steps, cheers

It was the last bit that was difficult for me, the V3 x C3. I couldn't understand how you were multiplying V3 by C3 when C3 was the final answer ha ha. Needless to say I failed Algebra!

I have developed my own simpler calculation for my daft little brain.

I use:-

V1 x C1 = A
V2 x C2 = B

(A + B) / total volume of liquid = ABV.

Thanks again for showing me the light! I wouldn't have had a clue without the guidance from Moe. This group is amazing!

He says it took him 30 seconds lol

Actually i prefer also to do things MY way.
So we are not alone,Humans progress by experimentation. So you are bang on to find out what works,And what does not.
There is a danger however and that is trying to reinvent the wheel. We stand on the shoulders of giants.
I learned much from my father and his winemaking forebears,But i have over the space of half a century taken my knowledge to a whole new level. However the more i learn the more i realise there is.Unfortunately i don't have all eternity for my education. :(

Oh I agree with all of that yes, just needed to find an easier way to do that particular thing because I don’t have a mathematical brain. If there’s an easier way to do things though, I’ll find it 😂.

Definitely don’t know everything and don’t claim to. But I’m not following others like a sheep because that’s the way everyone else does it ha ha! If I get given guidelines I run with it as far as my brain will allow.

Plus I’m a woman and I’m awkward. 😂

It’s nice to have something in common with the king of the forums ha ha!
