Hi all

I'm due to start a wheat beer soon(4 gallon imperial) using Wyeast Weistaphaner, does anyone know how much dme i would need for this to achieve 5.2% abv or there abouts. Would it be about 5-6 lbs of dme that i would require. I'm a bit unsure on how to estimate how much dme i will need. I'm looking for an og of around 1050-52 which should hopefully leave me with my desired alcohol level.

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, just done a quick calculation in Promash :geek: Assuming no additional sugars,.... 4 Imp gallons=18.8Lts to achieve 1051 OG, you will need 2.49 KG of DME for a 1 hour boil time (used the Muntons figures).=5.49lb & to achieve 5.27% ABV you will need to ferment to a FG of 1011 so your estimated figures are not far out :thumb: Check out the WYeast website to see what % ABV this yeast strain will tolerate & i think you will have a good idea whare you are. Best of luck

You could also use the recipe forum calculator to check your recipes ;)

Thanks guys, i'm more confident i will get this right now. If i'm going to be honest i've just finished a batch but overestimated with the dme and the final result was 6.4% abv, ha ha ha. It tastes nice but its siding more towards duvel than weistephan.

Can i ask how did you know 2.49kg would be required.?

I used Promash (homebrew software) to calculate, selecting DME as an ingredient for your brew length & increased the qty untill an OG of 1051 indicated that gave me the amount of DME required. As Tubby says if you havnt got Promash or Bear Smith which are both really good you can use the calculators in the forum.
