Ace electric boilers?

In fact I've been thinking one of these would be ideal. Not marked food safe though, anyone know anything about these things, does that really matter?

Have you got a flase bottom in there? I've used nothing but pellets and they do layer up but on top of the FB, none ever seem to get down to the very bottom of the boiler. I've def not experienced any cutting out or other boiler issues.

+1 same experience as Nigel. I leave the bazooka and FB in place and have never had any issues. Works very well if you include some leaf hops in as they act as a filtering layer for the pellets.

My 1600W version never seems to burn much on the bottom - a quick scrub removes anything.

I seem to be a bit unlucky then as i had to chip the majority off with a knife then using a wire wool pad. I know probably not the best idea but was not gonna come off without. The brew before was perfect with leaf but for some reason i decided to use up some pellets. Just hope i have no burned taste come through.
This was the first time i did a step mash so i dont know if that had anything to do with it. To save time i didnt drain the wort after mashing. I just removed the bag,dunk sparged and added it back. Probably saved 30mins of the brew day.

I've got new Brew day planned for tomorrow which I've decided to replace the bazooka with tubing that goes directly between the out and a false bottom I purchased separately as mine didn't come with one. I'll see how this fairs and report back. I had a real pain with pellets with the bazooka fb combo last time

I had great success this weekend using a big 100 micron fish tank fllter bag as a hop spider. Almost nothing deposited on the FB, nothing stuck to the heater plate, really really clean.

Concerns are that 100 micron might be too small to let the good things through, but the wort looks and smells like any other I've made, and that the bag I've used isn't food safe but I bought it cheap for a trial. Now I've seen how good it is I'll be buying a proper stainless version even if it means shelling out.

No more bazooka worries.

Can anyone help with the Inkbird. Its wired up but i cant use it. Keep getting the flashing error " HI AL". Cantr find much info online apart from i need to clear this before i can use it.

I think that's the high temp alarm telling you that it's sensing a temperature above whatever the hi-alarm setting is.

To change that hold down the set button for three seconds, scroll down about four steps till you get to AH, use the arrows to change that to a value high enough to eliminate the problem then press the set button again for three seconds to lock it.

Excellent thanks mate sorted it. Really looking forward to using this. Next step is to attatch the Amp meter and probably an On Off switch and experiment with the thermowell. Its showing 4c less than my STC.
I absolutely love putting this stuff together, its extremely satisfying.

Its Stainless Steel. I have used the mash bag in the boil before and it holds up fine although did get a little stained. Probably gonna get another for hops.

:). I got the idea from the video i posted ages ago about the ace mods. Guy has removed all his videos which is a shame but given me plenty of inspiration. Hope he is well.
I would of had the build done by now if i had not ordered some of the wrong parts.
Reading back over this thread found lots of good info.

Mine's nylon and doesn't melt, just googled it and the melting temp of nylon is >200C depending on the type.

Just took delivery of my Ace boiler yesterday! I looked at my brewing log and realised that the last brew I did was in 2005! (I used to regularly do full mash brewing but have been busy running a pub in the meantime which I have now sold). I have also bought a plate chiller and so an itching to get back in the swing of things. Just not sure what to brew first...... My old recipes look quite dated now so I am thinking about trying something new. A nice APA perhaps, or an IPA, or a nice oatmeal stout..... Anyone got any stunning recipes for beers in the 4.5 - 5.5% range that they can recommend?

That looks excellent. Finally starting to understand how it all goes together. I could not get where you put the thermowell before. I notice your Amp meter is not wired up after the blow out. I have an analogue one but despite wiring up the PID correctly i couldnt figure out how to add the meter.

What type of connector have you used for the temp probe? I would like to tidy mine up as its bound to get yanked at some point.

Hi Beercat

When I tested the box with the amp meter before it blew up I realised that it wasn't really necessary. Most of the time it have crazy readings because the PID is switching the current on and off so fast. When the PID runs the heater 100% of the time you get a sensible reading.

Once you've reduced the heater power to about 25% or less and it's still running fine then knowing the amps that it's using is nice, but not essential. I might order a new one at some point but for now it just fills a gap!

The probe screws into a standard 1/2" Tee fitting. About £2 on eBay. Then you can use any 1/2" fitting to connect to the hose - barb, disconnect etc. I saw the same elsewhere on the forum and thought it looked good.

I'll try and pop up a picture later to make it easier to see the fittings.

EDIT: Here you go. I also had some spare fittings lying around so have included a pic to show them separately.
