I used Malt Miller for the first time this week (because they don’t have extortionate postage costs for small orders). I was very inpressed with the service, everything came within 24 hours of ordering.

However, I accidentally ordered leaf hops instead of pellet. I’ve never used leaf hops before - is there anything I need to know or be aware of?

Bump me neither be nice to know

And cheers for letting us know postage is reasonable on smaller items
Comes in.handy for future brews

Cons - slightly lower utilisation (can't remember exact figure but Beersmith or equivalent will calculate) & slightly more wort lost to absorption.

Pros - lovely leaf filter bed to strain out all the break material when transferring to FV.

Cons are all fixed by upping quantities of hops & water that can all be calculated with a recipe builder. I like leaf for the boil but pellets for dry hopping as I have had grassiness from leaf dry hopping before (completely anecdotal of course!).

Thanks. The leaf were 14.7AA and the pellets 11 so I was able to adjust Brewers Friend fairly easily.

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised. They weren’t as cheap as CML, but I won the Inkbird competition so wanted to do a saison to program the fermentation temperature increases and I’ve heard the CML saison yeast is ****.

I personally prefer whole hops for the boil, not only do they form a nice filter bed for your wort when it comes to transfer time, but I prefer the flavour I get from them. As an example, I've used Mosaic pellets before and now mosaic whole hops, the whole hops actually have a hint of herbal in the flavour they imparted that wasn't present in the pellets, and it's delicious!

I often use Maltmiller too, especially for smaller orders as they have the £3 Royal Mail option...

Out of curiosity, what Saison yeast did you end up getting? I find that although Belle Saison sticks to the bottle better, I keep going back to M29! It gives off tons of flavour if you ferment at 25-26 degrees C after the first 3 days, you don't get as much fermented lower.

I went for M29, partly because it was cheaper than the Belle Saison and partly because I’m a big fan of all the other MJ yeasts.

It’s the first time I’ve ever made a saison.

I love making Saison, you can just do so much with them, and don't have to worry about keeping it cool whilst fermenting.
