So a friend of mine has set me a challenge to try and brew him a larger like forster's for him iv never brewed from scratch iv normally used the brew kits so dont really know where to start, im thinking its not really something you can brew at some, but im hoping i can get something close to show him up :D iv done a few lagers as iv said with the kits and just prime the bottles, also on another note i've got one of them plastic kegs but for some reason i keep losing pressure iv tried putting vaseline around the top but no joy is there anything i could be missing?? thanks all

That's like asking someone to make a loaf of bread like Netto white sliced innit? Why bother?! ;)

Have you tried replacing the o'ring? If its split, warped or missing, it may not be creating a proper seal. Regards the f*****s, if you're a kit brewer, perhaps look at a lager kit that uses lager yeast. I think coopers euro lager is one that may, but i hear it tastes more like a stella type of beer. If you're friends favourite beer is f*****rs, he probably wont be able to tell the difference [emoji11].

Just bear in mind that if you did this, you'd need to be able to control your fermentation temp. Maybe keep it around 12 degrees. The fv sat in a water bath with a couple of ice bottles rotated twice a day could do this if you dont have a fridge with an stc1000. Lager probably wont get the desired carbonation level in a pressure barrel so bottles would be better for lager anyway.

Ye I know he just wants to see if it can be done, I'm starting it might be coming from the co2 valve or the tap

Agree with the comments about imitating a commercial lager. Just try to make a good pale ale, without too much fuss.

Ive made Coopers Original lager a few times with good results. It's the one with a white label and a green lid. I've always done it to 25L with 500g DME plus 1 kilo of table sugar, except the first time when it was plus 1kg brew enhancer and 500g table sugar.

The yeast with this kit is a Coopers ale yeast that copes well with the fairly high temperatures that we sometimes get in the UK summer. So I'd recommend it. Relatives who drink the advertised beers have said that the Coopers kit it is OK too.

Pressure barrel may not be great for a heavily carbonated lager, so using 2L lemonade bottles might be an option.

I found the following made a great 'lager'

My last AG brew was a 'lager style' and I used US05. The rest was just 6kg lager malt and Saaz hops. Never going to be a true lager but it turned out rather well if a bit strong at 7%. I used a single temp step infusion mash and fermented at about 20c (front room temp).

As regards leaking pressure barrel I usually inject a Co2 cartridge in then go round all the seal areas with soapy water to try and find any leaks. Last time I had to replace the rubber relief band on the injector fitting
