Hi, happy Easter to all, just started an ag brew that calls for 100grm + of cascade with first hops added for 60mins,just thinking do i boil for 30 mins then add hops or add them at start of boil so i have a 60 min boil instead of a normal 90 min.

download beer engine its a simple calc and will help you. If your making an ipa generally the IBUs we use are around 46 - 55 but we have gone up to 70s which is quite bitter

thanks for that mark, did as you said, added 10 grm fuggles at start of boil, going for 75min boil and got 46.3, thanks again.

For pale beers or anything using a pilsner or lager malt I usually boil for 90 mins but treat the hop addtions from 60 as usual

Thats good to know, is this something you stumbled over Darcey??

With out having a full Aleman explanation, it has something to do with removing more DMS which is more common in pale unroasted malts. It leaves the finished beer more delicate and crisper. With out the 'cooked' vegetable flavour.

I have not done any side by side comparison brews, but the last pale I boiled for 90mins came out lovely. And lots of commercial micros boil pales for at least an hour.

You might have to liquor back however!
