Hi i was wondering if when you buy a fresh 5ltr pet bottle off water and are going to empty the water out and start a brew do you need to sterilise the bottle first or is it ok as it had the water in it ? After racking off can you store the wine in a 5ltr pet bottle instead of glass bottles with corks ? And last but not least what is gp yeast is it different from ordinary wine yeast ? :hmm:

Ive been using 5 litre coke bottles for months i even go to the cheap stores buy cheap 18p lemonade then chuck it down the sink :D You need to rinse the bottles in warm water then fill with sterilising solution right to the top and dont forget the lids. only sterilise just before you are about to bottle though. Hope this helps

I have never sterilised a freshly opened water bottle.

After racking you can store wine in a PET to bulk mature, but it should be filled right up to the neck. If there's a significant airspace, bottle it.

What do you mean by “ordinary wine yeast” ?

You can buy sachets of White Wine Yeast or Red Wine Yeast, but those are still fairly General Purpose with a slight bias.

GP yeast or yeast compounds do exactly what they say on the pot and I use them for 90%+ of my winemaking. Occasionally I might use a varietal yeast or something like Gervin GV2 for full-bodied reds.

Thanks for the answers .Moley i mean a general yeast like a tub of youngs super wine yeast that i have been using .As for the bulk storing off the wine if it has been stored for a few months in the 5ltr pet bottle does this mean when opened does it have to be drank pretty soon or can you replace the lid for another time. Sorry for all the questions but i seem to have a lot too learn yet .

The Young's Super Yeast is a GP yeast compound, it contains some nutrient and some bentonite which aids clearing, so in that respect it is an “ordinary wine yeast” with extras.

If you bulk store, whether in a DJ or a PET, if you started drinking from it you would have to get through the lot in a few days, or drink some and bottle the rest. Oxygen becomes the enemy.
